I have investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel installation. The original 2-story,24'x 24' house was constructed in 1900. In 2009 the attic space was insulated and finished off 17-PV solar panels are to be installed on the west facing roof. The ratters are full dimension 2x6 installed at 24"on-center, spanning 11'-8", with an 8/12 roof slope. Kneewalls were installed when the attic was finished off approximately 3' in from the exterior eave walls and supported on what appears to be 2x6 floor joists. The floor joists are installed 16" on-center and are attached to the 2x4 exterior stud walls approximately 4" down from the top plate and prevent the roof from spreading. The roofing is asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and a PV panel unit weight of 40±lbs,with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
