house and connector/garage roofs to support proposed solar arrays.
On March 2, 2017, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing on the house
and enclosed carport for the proposed PV solar panel installations,The I-story,26'x48' ranch
style house and 12' wide carport attached to the west gable end of the house was constructed in
1966. The roof framing for both the house and carport appear to he site built 2x4,Fink design roof
trusses installed at 24"on-center, spanning 26', with a 3.5/12 slope. Properly sized 7"plywood
gussets,attached to both sides of the truss, secure the truss members to each other. 33 PV solar
panels are to be installed on the south facing roof of the house and carport. The roofing is asphalt
shingles.
Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 402 lbs,with the
attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the
load to any one roof truss, the existing roof framing for both the house and carport are adequate to
support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA
State Building Code.
