Vreeland Design Associates Re: Joyce Snyder, 130 Hinckley St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing roof to support proposed solar array. On 2/8/17, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing house roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 1-1/2-story, 24.x 40', modular constructed cape style house with a 7' wide porch with shed roof along the length of the south side was built in 1989. 12 PV solar panels are to be installed on the shed roof of the porch. The porch rafters appear to be 2x6 installed at 16"on-center, spanning 7', with a 5/12 roof pitch. The rafters are supported on the south wall of the house and on an cave beam that appears to be 2—2x8, spanning 8' and supported on 4x4 posts. The roofing is asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array.Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 40+lbs,with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4'on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing porch roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
