Conway, MA 01341 413-522-7771 November 23,2016 Mr. Spartan Giordano W Charles St. Greenfield, MA 01301 Re.: Roof Evaluation for Solar Panel Installations Gerrit Stover Residence,55 Fairview Ave., Northampton,MA Dear Spartan. At your request, I was at the above address on November 161" to examine and measure the roof framing system. The owner is planning to have solar photovoltaic panels installed on the eastern side of the roof and you are planning to install solar hot water panels on the western side of the roof. The photovoltaic panels will add 2 Vi lbs. per square ft. (psf) to the roof dead load. The solar hot water panels will add 3 % psi to the roof dead load. The owner also plans to insulate the space between the rafters and add gypsum wallboard to the underside of the rafters and collar ties which will add about 3.5 psf to the roof dead load. The existing roof has sheet metal roofing. The ground snow load for Northampton is 40 psf. The calculated roof snow load for the metal roof was 27 psf. (slippery surface with 8112 slope). The panels are less than I ft. above the roof surface, not high enough to cause significant drifting from the design storm, The code specified design wind speed for Northampton is 90 mph. For components, the wind uplift pressures on the roof ranged from 14.6 psi in the field to t7 psf.at the edges and corners. At the south end of the attic, the rafters are 2x8's at 16 in. on center spanning about 12 ft. horizontally. When analyzed with the addition of the panels, the full snow load, the insulation, and the drywall, the rafters were determined to be adequate for bending, shear, and deflection. No reinforcing of the framing system is required for this area. At the north end,the rafters are rough 2x6's at about 24 in.on center spanning about 12 ft. horizontally. When analyzed with the addition of the panels, the full snow load, and the added insulation and dry wail, the rafters were determined to be at the just over the maximum allowable stress in bending and adequate for shear. However, they were very significantly below the minimum deflection limits. All of these rafters will need to be reinforced by sistering 2x6's to the existing rough 2x6's. I have attached a roof framing plan (SKI),and two sections (SK2 & SK3)depicting the reinforcements. SK2 shows the reinforcement with the rafter ties at the same elevation as the existing ones at the southern end. In this case, the sisters are over 12 ft. long which will result in a lot of waste but give the owner a slightly higher ceiling. I have presented SK3 is an alternate scheme. By lowering the rafter ties a few inches, 12 ft. sisters can be used which will save some money without sacrificing much headroom. You can discuss this with the owner to determine which scheme to use. Mr. Stover mentioned that he is planning to insulate between the rafters. Attic ventilation is not my specialty, so I recommend that you discuss the ventilation of the rafter spaces with Mr. Stover and develop a plan so there will not be any condensation problems. Good luck with the project. Cal] me if you have any questions. Sincerely, Michael Rainville,P.E. Structural Support& Design Services 236 S. Shirkshire Rd.
