The presence of wire cables with turnbuckles, which run between walls, perpendicular to the peak, suggest that the walls had previously begun to move outward due to the end reaction of the rafters at the top of the walls. Since the ceiling joists are above the bottom of the rafters, it is likely they did not restrain the outward end reaction of the rafters. During the renovation efforts, support beams of 4-ply 2x12s were added. These beams run parallel the peak and support the rafters where the rafters and ceiling joists connect. These beams are supported by wood columns at regular intervals. Metal connectors join the columns to beams. The roof deck is plywood, and the roofing material consists of asphalt shingles. Still, the lateral restraints are beyond the scope of our review. As such, GZA offers no opinion as to the advisability of removing the lateral wire tension ties. Further, it is unclear if the posts which support the beams have been built on a proper footing.We provide no opinion as to the adequacy of the post/column foundations. Conclusion: Based on the information and photographs you have provided, in our opinion, the roof is satisfactorily robust to support the additional dead load of the proposed PV system.
