roof to support proposed solar array.
I have investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel
installation. The original I-story,26'x 40' ranch style house with a walkout basement garage, on
the south gable end, was constructed in 1955. A 20'x 22' addition is connect to the north gable
end of the house. 15-PV solar panels are to be installed on the west roof of the original house. The
rafters appear to be Douglas-fir and are 2x6 (13/,"x5'/n") installed at 16"on-center, spanning 12'-
6", with a 5/12 roof slope.2x6 ceiling joists are attached to the bottom of the rafters and prevent
the roof from spreading. The existing roofing is asphalt shingles.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and a
PV panel unit weight of 40f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of
4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing of the
original house is adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load
requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
