as supervisor.CMR 780, Sixth Edition Section 108.3.5.1.

Washington/Washington-Ottombre residence at 26 Ford Crossing, in Northampton, MA.The
purpose of this review was to provide an opinion as to the structure's ability to support a
proposed rooftop photovoltaic system.The information you provided includes a site location
plan, an elevation,and manufactured wood roof truss design information.The manufactured
wood roof truss design information bears the seal of a Professional Engineer licensed to practice
in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.The information that you have provided is attached to
this letter for reference.
You are proposing to erect PV panels on the south side of the house roof.The house is a two
story colonial style residence measuring approximately 26'x34'with an"L"that measures
approximately 5'x23'-4".The residence was designed with intersecting gable roofs.The roof was

residence has a plywood deck and asphalt shingles.
Recommendations:
While the truss design information that you provided suggests that the roof is sufficiently robust
to support the additional Dead Load from the proposed PV system, any conclusion to that point
is predicated on the assumption that the roof and supporting structure were constructed as
designed. Prior to installing the PV array, proper construction and truss installation, should be
field verified. Field verification should include confirmation that the trusses are installed in
accordance with manufacturer's design, including any and all required truss bracing.Since truss
bracing is an important but often overlooked detail,field verification of required bracing
installation is essential.

We base this opinion on the information you have provided and the following assumptions. We
assume that the truss designer/fabricator(Universal Forest Products)performed their design
with the proper load distribution on the truss(dead, balanced and unbalanced snow loads, etc.).
We assume that the roof supporting structure was constructed as designed and that all required
bracing is installed as required. Installation of truss bracing must be verified prior to erection of
the solar array.We also assume that,owing to their slippery surface,the solar panels will shed
snow better than the asphalt shingles.We further assume that the panels will be installed
parallel to the roof,eliminating any additional wind load.The ground snow load for
Northampton is 55psf. Based on the information you provided for similar projects,we assume
that the proposed PV panels weigh 2.6 psf(3.6%of ground snow load).
To summarize, in your opinion, once construction is confirmed to been in conformance with the
building and truss plans,and when the trusses are properly braced, both of which must be
confirmed, the roof will be structurally adequate to support the additional Dead Load of the
proposed roof mounted Photovoltaic System.
