The information you have provided is attached to this letter for reference. The house is a recently constructed two story residence.The main house roof section has a peak that runs east-west.A garage and second floor addition roof section has a peak that runs north-south and intersects the main house roof with valleys. Both roof sections have 2x10 roof rafters at 16"O.C.The main house roof is pitched 45-degrees on both sides of the peak.This main section of the house measures approximately 20'x30'.The 2x10 rafters here span 10'on the horizontal.The garage roof section has a 45-degree pitch on the east side and a 34-degree pitch on the west side.The rafters span 8'-6"on the horizontal on the east side and 12'-8"to the west.The east rafters continue beyond the support at the second floor wall to the first floor garage wall.The roof has a plywood deck.The roofing material consists of asphalt shingles.The photographs that you provided suggest that all the structural members,including the roof decking,are in good serviceable condition. Conclusion: In our opinion the documents you have provided suggest that,the roof will adequately support the dead load of the proposed PV panels. We base this opinion on the information you have provided and the following assumptions. We assume that,owing to their slippery surface,the solar panels will shed snow better than the asphalt shingle roof.We further assume that the panels will be installed parallel to the roof,eliminating any additional wind load.The ground snow load for Northampton, MA is 55psf.
