I have investigated the details of the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel installation. The main 21'x 26',2-story house was constructed in 1810 and the 2-story, 12'x24' back addition with a 4' wide shed roof porch along the south side appears to have been constructed at a later date. 8-PV solar panels are to be installed on the south roof of the addition and porch. The rafters of the addition and porch are full dimension 2x4 installed at 24"on-center, spanning 5'-8"on the addition and 4' over the porch.The addition roof has an 8/12 pitch and the porch a 4/12 pitch. 2x4 ceiling joists are attached to the addition rafters and prevent the roof from spreading. The roofing is asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mourning details for the proposed array.Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 40± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing for both the addition and porch roofs are adequate to support the proposed PV array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code..
