On 9/8/16 we conducted a site visit and investigated the house roof framing in the area of the proposed PV panel installation.The 26'x 39', 1-1/2-story cape style house with attached garage was built in 1967. 18 PV solar panels are to be installed on the west facing 35'-6"long shed dormer roof. The dormer rafters are 2x6 installed at 16"on-center,spanning 12'-6"at approximately a 3/12 pitch.2x6 ceiling joists are attached to the bottom of the rafters at the top of dormer wall and prevent the roof from spreading. The original dormer roofing membrane and sheathing has been removed and replaced with 5/8"plywood sheathing and a standing seam metal roofing.2x6 vertical blocking has been installed to the sides of the rafters and resting on top of the 2x6 ceiling joists approximately 2'-6"in from the exterior wall. The 2x6 blocking is attached to the sides of the rafters with 2—21/2"TimberLok screws. This blocking will limit the deflection of the rafters under full snow load. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 42th lbs,with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the reinforced west roof framing,as outlined above,is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
