Matthew, Per your request, we have analyzed 2 roof sections, the main roof, and the front Addition, at the above referenced address for gravity loads to asses the addition of solar panels to the existing structure.After the site visit on 8101/2016,we ran some calculations on the roof with 4 psf ailoted for solar panel dead loading,in addition to snow,and existing dead load.The front addition is a shed roof approx. 3.5/12 pitch,with rough cut 2x6 rafters at 16"o.c. spanning appx. 13',and supported at the main house exterior bearing wall on a rough sawn ledger. We find reinforcement of this roof is required. See the attached detail for this "Addition"area.In the view from the attic,the main roof is a exterior high kneewalI type cape rafter roof,made from 2x rafters that appear to have been spiked at the collar tie some time after fire damage to the original rafters.The main roof appears to now be supported by the initerior walls,since the splices in the rafters render the collar tie ineffective. Since retrofit of this roof would create major renovation due to lack of access to the members,the interior or the exterior roof materials would need to be disassembled to retrofit,we dont fecil it is feasible to mount the panels on the main portion of the house roof.We did not go any further with our analysis of the main roof The following describes the loading used for our calculations, and assumptions/conditions made for the panel installation. Loading Analysis: According to the Massachusetts State Residential code,the standard for snow load in the area of the home is 40 psf ground snow load.The following factors were also used;occupancy category II, I=1.0, Ct=1.2,C=LO,Pg=40 psf,and Pf=30S psi And Ps Unbalanced=40 psf. Although the Massachusetts code,and references allow load reduction for balanced snow condition loading, reductions for pitch,and slick roof surface, it also requires analysis of an unbalanced snow condition for each side of the roof as well.The Residential code references ASCE7-05 as a standard to calculate snow loading,which allows roof rafters to be evaluated using the ground snow load, as the unbalanced load condition.The unbalanced load of 40 psf on the solar panel side is the controling case for the roof in question. We propose a retrofit to the Addition roof by installing 2x6 Douglas Fir#2 rafters sistered to the rough cut rafters,and an addition of a 2x8 ledger over the rough cut ledger that currently exists.Additional fasteners are also required,according to the attached sketch.We estimate the dead load of the roof to be 14 psf with the solar panels,rafters, and existing asphalt shingle,which includes an additional 4psf for the solar system.The calculations were based on Douglas fir material,even though the materials in the existing rafters likely exceed the stress values of todays DE. Solar Panel/Racking Conditions/Assumptions: The solar panels are to be mounted on an aluminum mil system with the rails installed parallel to the ridge,and at least 2 rails per panel.Rails are to have support foot spacng of 48"o.c.maximum along each rail,and one support at each end.Closer spacing is allowed for rails or supports. Supports are to be fastened through the sheathing into the rafter member without splitting or stripping the fastener.Any stripped fasteners,or fasteners that miss or split the rafter are to be repositioned. Split rafters shall be repaired in an approved manner. Each row of railsupports must be staggered with the adjacent mil supports by 16"or to the adjacent rafter to distribute the load over all the rafters as uniformly as possible.The panels,rail system/suports must be rated by the rail/panel system manufacturers for the support spacings above for the indicated ground snow load.Fastening of the rails/support system to the rafters is to be done for 90 mph,3 sec gust wind,pressure,and uplift in addition to the indicated snow load.Design of solar panels,mils, supports,and their respsective fasteners is to be done by others and not addressed by this analysis. Retrofit Required: Please see the attached sketsh for the Addition roof retrofit.Use of the main roof is not reccomended. Items not included in this report: Typically,the paneVrail/support system,and fastening methods for the same are designed by the manufacturers of these components or their engineers.Therefore, the following is not included in our review at this time,and not covered by this report.These items may be required to complete the solar system install requirements. We have not performed a full wind analysis on the rafters,as this is typically uncommon for existing buildings in this wind zone/building location,and verification can not be made for the hidden fastening of components at the eave. Given the age and relativey good condition of the addition,the wind resistance is not likeley to pose an issue for the Additon's raters.If you require design or review for any of these items,we can provide them in addition to this report. We believe this proposal is conservative given the good condition,of the Addition.This proposal is not to be considered final, and construction should not begin until it has both the engineers seal,and the final approval from the building department having local jurisdiction.
