Homeowner Signature • The Engineer Group, LLC 20 Bofat Hill Road Chesterfield, MA 01012 Solar Panel/Racking Conditions/Assumptions: The solar panels are to be mounted on an aluminum rail system with the rails installed parallel to the ridge over the roof area west of the shed dormer,and spaced approx 42" o.c. max between rails. Rails to have support foot spacng of 48" o.c. maximum along each rail, and one support at each end. Closer spacing is allowed for rails or supports. Supports are to be fastened through the sheathing into the rafter member without splitting or stripping of the fastener or wood.Any stripped fasteners, or fasteners that miss or split the rafter are to be repositioned. Split rafters shall be repaired in an approved manner. Each row of rail supports must be staggered with the adjacent rail supports by 16" or to the adjacent rafter to distribute the load over all the rafters as uniformly as possible. The panels,rail system/suports must be rated by the rail/panel system manufacturers for the support spacings above to carry the indicated ground snow load,wind load and combination of the two. Fastening of the rails/support system to the rafters is to be done for 90 mph, 3 sec gust wind, pressure, and uplift in addition to the indicated snow load. Retrofit Required: There are two areas of retrofit required, and several areas where the builder had not completed planned work by the time of our site visit.We will list everything below. The framing around the skylight is not framed conventionally. It should have 2x8 double rafters each side of the skylight, with double headers hung from these rafters with joist hangers. The trimmer rafters should be hung from the headers with joist hangers. To the west side of the new shed dormer (which is not part of the proposed solar location but needs mentioning) the double rafter is not connecting to the structural ridge. It was connected to a single 2x10 ridge about 33" long, and unsupported.The 2x10 section of unsupported ridge needs to be adequately supported in a manner approved by the building department and inspector. The window to the south, which has 2x6 headers spanning 7'-6", needs to have structural support mulls of 2x4 or larger to break the span into 3 equal spans . All roof members which are visible require rafter ties at the exterior wall, and joist hangers a their ends elsewhere, including but not limited to the end at the structural ridge.The size and installation of hangers,and ties shall be suitable to the building official. Items not included in this report: Typically, the panel/rail/support system, and fastening methods for the same are designed by the manufacturers of these components or their engineers.Therefore,the following is not included in our review at this time, and not covered by this report. These items may be required to complete the solar system install requirements.We have not performed a full wind analysis on the rafters, as this is typically uncommon for existing buildings in this wind zone/building location, and verification can not be made for the hidden fastening of components. The shed dormer rafters and other rafters where solar panels are not proposed east of the shed dormer, and to the north were not analyzed. We also did not analyze the post and levels below for transferring load through the building, as this should be already handled by the existing building permit and inspections. Matthew, Per your request,we have analyzed the roof at the above referenced address for gravity loads to assess the impact that addition of solar panels will have to the existing rafters.After the site visit on 9/15/2016,we ran some calculations on the south roof rafters with 4 psf estimated for sadditional solar panel loading, in addition to snow and existing dead load.We do feel that there are several areas where reinforcement is necessary for the addition of the panels and is described below.The following describes the loading used for our calculations, and assumptions/conditions we made for the panel installation. Loading Analysis: According to the Massachusetts State Residential code, the standard for snow load in the area of the home is 40 psf ground snow load.The following factors were used;occupancy category IL I =1.0, Ct=1.2, Ce=1.1,Pg= 40 psf, and Pf= 37 psf. Although the code, and references allow load reduction for balanced snow condition loading,reductions for pitch, and slick roof surface, it requires an unbalanced snow condition be analyzed for each side of the roof as well.The Residential code references ASCE7-05 as a standard to calculate snow loading, which allows roof rafters to be evaluated using the ground snow load, as the unbalanced load condition.The unbalanced load of 40 psf on the solar panel side is the controling load case. The existing south face roof where panels are proposed is comprised of two types of rafter systems, mostly for the new ranovation,and partly for the existing roof with added ridge.The panels are proposed to be installed to the west of the new shed dormer. Both roo rafter systems extend from the eave to a new structural ridge spanning approx. 31'. 2x10 rafters 16" o.c. as observed in the new renovated area, (still under construction att ime of our visit) and 2x6 rough sawn with 2x8 spf rafters sisttered in the existing roof at 24" o.c.There is a shed dormer framed into the roof, as well as a skylight.The roof pitch is 8/12.The span is roughly 9.2' on both roof types from the eave to the supporting ridge.Drywall ceiling is to be attached to the underside of all of the rafters, fiberglass batt insulation in the cavities, roof sheathing, and asphalt shingle.We estimate the dead load of the roof to be 16 psf without the solar panels.Total dead load of 20 psf was used for our analysis which includes an additional 4psf for the solar system. The calculations were based on SPF#2 material, even though the materials in the existing rough sawn rafters may exceed the stress values of todays SPF.
