It is my understanding that solar panels weighing approximately 4 pounds per square foot(psf)are proposed to be installed on the southwest face of the main house roof. Per your inspection, pictures and layout plan, the main roof is a framed with 14"deep pre-engineered wood "I- joists' spaced at 16" on center. The joists span 22'-6" and slope at a 3:12 pitch. The manufacturer of the joists could not be determined due to the finished ceiling, The Massachusetts Amendment to the 2009 International Residential Building Code snow chart indicates the design ground snow load in Leeds(Northampton) is 40 pounds per square foot(psf), which translates to a design roof snow load of 28 psf. The roof dead load of the I-joists, plywood and shingles is approximately 10 psf and the addition of the solar panels results in a total dead load of 14 psf. For this evaluation, the load capacities of matching size 1-joists from several manufacturers were investigated. Design software and load tables from Lousiana Pacific, Boise-Cascade and Trus-Joist were checked. All I-joists with top and bottom flanges wider than 2" were capable of spanning 23' with loads well in excess of 42 psf at a spacing of 16". Therefore it is reasonable to assume the existing Zjoists are capable of supporting the proposed solar panels without reinforcement. No other framing areas were included in the scope of this evaluation. The above opinion is based on the above information provided by you and the assumption that the framing members and connections are in sound condition. Any deviations from the above criteria discovered during the course of the work must he immediately brought to our attention.
