Vreeland Design Associates Re: Jeffrey and Christine Duckworth, 16 Fort St,Northampton,MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. On 6/10/16 we conducted a site visit and investigated the roof framing of the 22'x 32', 2-story hipped roof house for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The house was constructed in 1927. The rafters are full dimension 2x6 installed at 24"on-center,spanning 10'-6", with a roof pitch of 6/12.The hip rafters are also full dimension 2x6 and appear straight and true, 2x6 ceiling joists, at 24"on-center, run the length of the house with the long side facing south. 8 solar panels are proposed to be installed on the south roof and 3 panels on the east roof.The roofing is asphalt shingles. While the roof framing appears straight and true with nearly 90 years of service, additional reinforcing needs to he installed to prevent the north and south rafters from spreading apart. Install five(5)collar/rafter ties, a tie at every other rafter starting on the second jack rafter from the ridge/hip intersection, 2x6 ties can be used, attached to the sides of the rafters with S —21/2" TimberLok screws at each end. The ties can be installed at the top of the cellulose insulation. Due to the limited access to the attic through a small hatch it is likely that 3 — 8' lengths of2x6 will be needed to make up the approximate 18' length of the ties.Another option is to use 3/16"high- strength steel cable with 1/2"eye bolts secured to the rafters with Simpson DTT2Z brackets. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 40+ lbs,with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the reinforced south rafters, as outlined above, and the existing east roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA Stale Building Code.
