The purpose of this review was to provide an opinion as to the structures'ability to support a proposed rooftop photovoltaic system. You also provided catalog information on the proposed photovoltaic(PV)panels. Both the roof structure information and the information on the proposed PV panels are attached to this letter for reference. You are proposing to erect PV panels on the south side of the Library and Studio at the residence. The Library and Studio are separate sections of what used to be a barn, prior to renovation. The library is approximately 24'x40'with a gable roof. The roof is supported by 1x10 rafters at 24"O.C.These 2x105 span 12'on the horizontal. Much of the framework is concealed by finishes and not visible. The Studio is roughly 2'1x25'with a gable roof. 2x10 rafters at 24"O.C.support the roof. These rafters span 12.5 on the horizontal.Much of the framework is concealed by finishes and not visible. Both the Library and Studio sections have two layers of asphalt shingles. Conclusion: While finishes prevent a more complete analysis and examination of the roof supporting structure the documents and photographs you have provided suggest that the roofs are satisfactorily robust to support the additional Dead load of the PV system. We base this opinion on the information you have provided and the following assumptions. We assume that the connections are sound and the roof deck braces the rafters. We also assume that owing to their slippery surface, the solar panels will shed snow better that the existing asphalt shingles. We further assume that the panels will be installed parallel to the roof, eliminating any additional wind load. The ground snow load for Northampton is ggpsf.Based on the information you provided the proposed PV panels weigh 2.3 psf.The panels weigh less than 5%of the snow load and will shed the snow better than the asphalt shingles. 9..iisLcinkes,clence L hr ry& Studio, Norfraan pton. MA 6, i/zn6 GZ\ Rooe 2 To summarize,we have reviewed the roof structures to the best of our abilities and conclude that the roofs are structurally adequate to support the additional Dead Load of the proposed roof mounted Photovoltaic System. If we can be of further assistance, please call Jonathan Rugg(603)232-8794 or Carl,Goldknopf (603) 232-8792. Very truly yours, GZA GEOENVIRONMENTAL, INC. Jonathan Rugg, P.E. Carl Goldknopf, P.E.
