Vreeland Design Associates An integrative approach to design engineering and site planning Date: May 20, 2016 To: Nelson Shifflett Valley Solar 340 Riverside Drive Northampton,MA 01062 From: David Vreeland, P.E. Vreeland Design Associates Re: David Deswert and Sara Pruss Solar Project, 58 Woodland Dr,Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 28'x 38' 2-story colonial. style house was constructed in 1997. The existing rafters are 2x8 installed at 16" on-center, spanning 13'-6" with a roof pitch of 10112. 2x6 ceiling joists are attached to the bottom of the rafters and prevent the roof from spreading. The roofing is one layer of asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of 40±lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
