Vreeland Design Associates Re: E. Spencer Ghazey-Bates, 86 Massasoit St,Northampton,MA: Structural assessment of new house roof to support proposed solar array. I have reviewed the roof framing details and roof truss design on the main house roof for the proposed PV panel installation. The roof framing of the new, 2016, 2-story house are 2x6 top chord, raised heel, Fink design roof trusses, designed and manufactured by Universal Forest Products, installed at 24"on-center, spanning 30' with a 9/12 pitch. The trusses have been designed for 40 psf snow load with a 15 psf dead load on the top chord. The roofing is asphalt shingles. 20-30 solar panels are proposed to be installed on the south roof. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV solar panel unit weight of approximately 38 lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss, the roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
