Vreeland Design Associates Re: Amy and Erik Rhodes, 36 Munroe St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing garage roof to support proposed solar array. I have reviewed the roof framing details of the 20'x 22' detached garage for the proposed 14 PV solar panel installation. The house was built in 1900 and the garage appears to have been built at a later date. The garage rafters are full dimension 2x4 installed at 16"on-center, spanning 10'-0" at a 6/12 pitch. 2x4 ceiling joists installed 32" on-center are nailed to the rafters at the top of the walls and prevent the roof from spreading. The existing roofing is asphalt shingles. The southeast 2x4 rafters that support the proposed solar panels will need to be reinforced by sistering a new 2x4x10' member to the sides of the existing rafters. Center the new 2x4 along the length of the existing rafters and attach with 16d nails at 12" o.c. or 2'/2" TimberLok screws at 24" O.C. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on an approximate PV panel unit weight of 41 f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing, reinforced as outlined above, is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
