Vreeland Design Associates Re: Smith College Conference Center, 51 College Lane, Northampton, MA: Conference Center Deck Renovation Project and removal of one of three doors out of Dining Room. Dear Louis, I have been working with Keiter Builders and overseeing the reconstruction of the Smith College Conference Center 14'x 32' deck. The Dining Room adjacent to the deck originally had a door and a set of stairs leading out onto the deck. As part of the deck renovation project the door and stairs were removed and the door was reframed for a new window. This door was not a required means of egress. The Dining Room is approximately 1700 ft2 and has a Use Group of A-2. Under Table 1004.1.1: Maximum Floor Area Allowances Per Occupant; Assembly— Standing space is 5 ft2 per occupant giving a total of 340 dccupants possible. Under Table 1021.1: Minimum Number of Exits For Occupant Load; ;for 1 — 500 occupants requires two (2) exits. The Dining Room currently has two (2) exits. Attached is a plan originally prepared by Thomas Douglas Architects where I have noted the existing exits and the location of the door that was removed.
