While performing routine night club inspections, a large crowd was observed in front
of the Calvin Theater. Upon further investigation, large numbers of occupants were
found throughout the theater especially in the aisles. A decision was made to hire a
detail to provide fire protection due to the large number of occupants. All exits
were checked and the fire alarm and the sprinkler system were inspected. The building
manager was asked about the number of people in the club, at which time he indicated
there were 1400 people.
While on scene, firefighters received verbal reports of two medical emergencies
involving female patrons of the club. (See captain Norris' report relative to
emergency medical response to the Calvin. )
While on site Deputy Chief Hurley received numerous safety complaints from the
occupants who were attending the concert about the number of people in the aisles and
the total number of people in the club. While inspecting the fire alarm system the
night of the overcrowding incident the building owner indicated that a call was
placed to Fire Alarm Dispatch earlier in the day about zoning out part of the alarm
system. He said this request was made to prevent the system from activating due to
hand members smoking in the basement. The following morning a request was made to
dispatch to check their log relative to this call. Dispatch did not have any record
of a phone call from the Calvin Theater.
A message was left with the Building Inspector about the event and a call was made to
the Fire Chief.

Responded to a medical call for a report of an individual who was unconscious inside
the Calvin theater on the first floor. The reporting party took us to the location
of the individual who had already left the area. We searched the entire area,
bathrooms, and outside and the individual was left unfounded. Our response to the
patient was hindered by people congregating and dancing in the aisle's and common
hallways.
