An investigation was conducted by Boston Chimney&Tower Company,Inc.,for the Department of Capital Asset Management and their observations, findings and recommendations are attached. The portion of greatest importance at the moment for your Department of Public Works states"It is my opinion that this chimney is not in imminent danger of falling down." it would appear that taking away the barricades blocking the road would be appropriate at this time. The report does recommend that work be performed on the site to better secure the chimney system. The future work,because of the building and chimney's closeness to the street, may require an application to the city to block the street in the future. The City of Northampton will be contacted prior to any work being performed so that Public Safety issues may be adequately addressed. Sincerely, Gordon D. I viewed the chimney on four sides with the use of binoculars. It is my opinion tbar this diim�is not in imminent danger of fZin& The following is a report of ray fi zliags and recommendations. Photograpbs are included with the report_ Findings The chimney cap on the Earle Street side has a wide f-Amwe. It is my opinion d=this frxzure was caused by lightning. There are some mming'and damWd radial brick directly below the fractured concrete cam. I also noted that some brick faces have spalled on the opposite side of the fractured cap located below the carbeiWl bridcwork at the top of the c6iumey- 'Dere are some vortical stress fractures located at various elevations of the chimney. The lighuling protection system is not in compliance wuh current standards. Recommendations 1) Remove the fiuctured cap and the top thirty courses of 6A&work 2) Install a reinforced monolithic concrete cover to completely seal the top of the chimney. 3) Reinstall the lightning protection equipment and install a second downlead copper cable 1800 from the existing downlead cable. 4) Cut out and tudTomr the vertical stress frracttires on the exienor surface of the chirrrtcy. I also noted that some brick faces have spalled on the opposite side of the fractured cap located below the corbelled brickwork at the top of the chimney. There are some vertical stress fractures located at various elevations of the chimney. The lightning protection system is not in compliance with current standards.
