Project: Demolition of Laundry and Power Plant
Northampton State Hospital
TOPIC: BLASTING PROCEDURE FOR STACK
TRANSMITTAL
Please find attached our proposed Blast Plan (six copies) as prepared by our subcontractor,
Saunders Drilling & Blasting Co., Inc., which has been previously faxed to your office. Please note that the
Northampton Building Inspector has also requested a copy of this plan, with a request that the Mayor of
Northampton pull the final switch as a public relations event. In summary, a wedge will be removed from
the lower portion of the stack and the structure will fall to the rear of the property well away from the upper
Hospital Building.
In regards to our current schedule, we anticipate that the asbestos abatement services will now be
completed by January 31`/early February; Tunnel cut-off masonry walls are currently being installed;
remaining utilities to be terminated in late-January; Portico Change Order work to begin week of January
27`" in conjunction with ACT Abatement for handling asbestos disposal; with Boiler Building demolition
beginning thereafter.
Again, we have scheduled the Coal Tunnel and roadway repairs as the last project tasks so that we
will be installing the asphalt in the spring.
We do understand that the Laundry Building has been removed from our contract by Mass
Development.

Re: Northampton State Hospital Smokestack Demolition
Gentlemen,
Here is the Blast flan information you requested for the above referenced project:
A wedge shaped pattern of 13/4"diameter holes will be drilled horizontally into the stack
on both sides of the duct opening. Each hole will have an explosive charge and a separate
"millisecond delay"detonator.
The blast will be designed to fire sequentially, taking advantage of the duct opening as a
point of relief.
Upon detonation the stack will lean in the direction of the main hospital building. We
anticipate the stack to begin to break up and start collapsing at approximately 30 to 45
degrees from vertical.
As you know, from many similar past projects, it is not possible to precisely determine
the enact number of charges or total pounds of explosives needed until we begin drilling.
At that point we will get critical information with respect to the condition and actual
construction of the stack, i.e., competency of the brick, presence of concrete liner,
reinforcing etc.
At this point we anticipate approximately 40 individual charges of 1/2 lb. per charge,
Please refer to the attached pages, 1 thru 3 for additional information.
If you have any questions, please call.
Respectfully,
{
David K. Saunders
