The Dinosaurs in the National Archives
in Washington, D.C.
On Septerhber 10, 1991, Phil Yeh's 35th published book, Theo
the Dinosaur, made its debut at the National Archives in
Washington, D.C. The book was produced through a donation
by Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles. Theo the Dinosaur tells the story of how four dinosaurs
managed to avoid extinction by learning how to read and
recycle.
The introductions were written by First Lady Barbara Bush
and Nigel Seale, Chairperson of Earth Day International.
The book features 46 of Yeh's full-color paintings and is
designed for all ages. Theo the Dinosaur is non-violent,
non-sexist, multi-ethnic and solution oriented.
The Dinosaur Animated Film
Cartoonists Across America's goal is to have the Theo the
Dinosaur book translated into a multitude of languages as well
as being adapted into a half-hour animated film (no speaking
roles, all music) for a global audience. The United Nations
estimates that 880 million people on the planet cannot read
and write. The animated film project is designed to
communicate the basic message about what reading can do to
solve global problems in a way that can be understood by all
ages and cultures.
The Theo the Dinosaur animated film will tell our story
without words (and with an international soundtrack). We are
working with Academy Award winning director John
Canemaker on the development of this film. The actual
production will feature talented artists from around the world.

them across the country, I say All hada'and onward!to

Hungary Issues Our Dinosaurs
on a Postage Stamp for Literacy
In 1990, Cartoonists Across America was invited to the first
International Hungarian Cartoon Festival in Budapest. The
band adds "and the World" to their banner when traveling
abroad. The week long Hungarian festival was highlighted by
a giant mural promoting literacy in more than 30 languages in
one of Budapest's beautiful public squares. At the end of the
festival, the Hungarian government chose Yeh's dinosaur
image as an official postage stamp honoring the United
Nations' International Literacy Year in 1990.

The Planet Literacy Book
In the summer of 1992, Cartoonists Across America & the
World will publish a book about their continuing campaign
called Planet Literacy. The book will feature an original full
color cover painted by award winning artist Phill Singer from
an idea created by Cartoonists Across America's founder Phil
Yeh. The contents of this book will include interviews with
notable people about the issue of literacy and what we all can
do to help. Original artwork that promotes reading from
cartoonists around the globe and the winners of the
International Literacy Cartoon Contest will also be presented
with interviews with many of the artists.
The book will also feature photos from The First Cartoonists
Across America Sports Auction for Literacy as well as
information about the second auction to be held in late 1992.
The first sports auction featured a variety of world famous
athletes and celebrities who signed books, posters, photographs
and balls with the slogan, "Read. Exercise Your Mind."
Some of the notable contributors to the auction included:
Mickey Mantle, Michael Jordan, Paul Newman, Mario
Andretti, Gordie Howe, Nolan Ryan, George Brett, George
Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Bo Jackson, Pat Riley, Randall
Cunningham, Debi Thomas, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Arnold
Palmer.
The purpose of this book is to create a lasting vehicle to
inspire everyone to get involved with the literacy movement.
Distribution will be targeted at literacy tutors, teachers,
librarians, and students. Workplace Literacy Programs will
also be covered in the Planet Literacy book. Corporate sponsors
are welcome to participate in this project.

Names Our Dinosaurs Mascots for '92.
The American Library Association has named Theo and his
dinosaur friends as the official mascots for their 1992 Library
Card Sign-up Campaign. For January, the city of Angouleme,
France has invited Cartoonists Across America to paint a
permanent wall in their city of comics for the 19th annual
Comics Art Festival. This French festival attracts more than
100,000 visitors and is the largest celebration of cartoon art in
the world. Cartoonists Across America plans to paint murals
with hundreds of world famous cartoonists in the upcoming
decade. The band will also distribute the new Theo book at a
variety of educational and literacy oriented events in 1992.
"your dinosaurs are among the world's most
persuasive advocates for literacy - not to mention the
most colorful. I wish them every success as they
continue their valiant flight away from extinction and
toward a world of reading and recycling.'
