Re: Patrick Boughan, 95 Straw Ave, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house
roof to support proposed solar arrays.
On 10/22/15, a site visit was conducted and the existing roof framing was investigated in the areas
of the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 1-1/2 story, bungalow style house was
constructed in 1934. Eight(8) solar panel are proposed on the house east roof and two (2)panels
on the south roof of the east gable dormer. The rafters of the 28' wide house are full dimension
2x6 installed at 24" on-center, spanning 13'-8", with a 10/12 roof slope. A 2x4 kneewall,located
4' in from the exterior wall, supported on 2x8 floor joists, reduces the effective rafter span to 9'-
8". The gable dormer has full dimension 2x4 rafters, installed at 24" on-center, spanning 6'-2",
with a 9/12 roof slope. 2x6 ceiling joists, installed at 24"on-center, are attached to the rafters and
prevent them from spreading. The roofing is asphalt shingles.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of
38f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and
staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing of both the main house
roof and gable dormer are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the current MA
state building code snow load requirements.
