The roof was currently covered with one layer of asphalt shingles. The sheathing was random width 5" to 14" and 3/4" to 1" thick. there were 1" to 2" gaps between the boards. The material was mostly softwood with a few chestnut boards at the bottom edge. Exterior There was no wall sheathing installed. The exterior wall cladding was vertical tongue and groove softwood, mixed in width from 3 1/2" to 4 1/2". It was nailed with square nails and painted with a red paint containing lead. The original window and door trim was 1" by 4 1/2" but had been replaced in spots with dimensioned pine. The corners were trimmed with one piece 7/8" by 5" meeting another 7/8" by 5 7/8". All trim was painted with a white paint containing lead. In the front there was a wooden drip edge extending 4" from the wall separating the gable siding from the lower wall siding. Cupola The cupola was framed with four corner posts resting on the roof sheathing and the rafter below. Vertical boards were attached to cross members to create the basic shape before trim and details were added. The louvers were for show and did not provide ventilation. Two of the vertical boards at the roof ridge were extended below the roof sheathing and were nailed into the rafters to anchor the cupola in place. In addition, there were two horizontal braces installed running left to right. The construction of the cupola roof is unknown. Construction Details Horizontal nailers were installed below the cross bracing on all exterior walls. These were softwood and varied in dimension from 3 1/2" by 3 1/2" to 4" by 4". They were supported by tenons in the posts but were not pinned. They were used to attach the exterior siding. The interior of the lower section of the barn was completely sheathed, walls and ceiling. Above the section with the concrete floor this sheathing was 5" tongue and groove held with square nails. The wall and ceiling sheathing in the half with the wood floor was newer 8" shiplap pine held with common nails. The other portions had a variety of sheathing types depending on when the remodel was complete and included some tongue and groove, some square edge planks, and some plywood. The rafters had a birdsmouth cut at the lower end to sit on top of the connecting Beams. The rafters were toenailed to the beam with square nails. There was no rafter board or beam where the rafters met at the top, instead the rafters were toenailed to each other at the joint. There were no purlins installed. There were originally sill beams around the perimeter and between the outer and central posts of each Bent but these sills were deteriorated to the point where it was difficult to determine any defining joint pattern. It did appear that the outer and central posts of each bent had a tenon on the bottom end and were originally pinned into place. The Posts were all constructed of softwood and were between 61/2" by 6 1/2" and 6 7/8" by 6 7/8". All of the upper Tie Beams were softwood and were 6 1/2" by 6 1/2". The lower Tie Beams and the Connecting Beams were a mixture of softwood and chestnut, with the chestnut being used primarily for the lower Beams. They were of similar dimensions to the softwood Beams. The sills appeared to be chestnut but none were salvageable and appeared to have been of similar dimensions to the beams as well. The corner braces were a mixture of chestnut and oak with the exception of 4 lower braces of softwood. They varied in dimension from 3" by 4" for the oak to 4" by 4" for the softwood. The rafters were softwood, spaced 24" on center, and were 2" by 6". The floor joists were divided by location. Those running front to back in the upper rear portion of the barn were 2" by 7" oak. Those running left to right in the upper front portion were 2" by 7" softwood. 3 R;016 -6 Construction Details r7Y Barn Deconstruction TO T-- 227 South St Framing Details The original frame was a timber frame structure built of mixed woods. There were 4 Bents. Each Bent had a central Post slightly offset from center. Each Bent had an upper Tie Beam that sat on top of the central Post tenon, pinned with two pins. The central Posts for each center Bents was the same height as the outer Posts, but the central Post for each end Bent was shorter than the end Posts by 1'9" and the upper Tie Beam was tenoned into the outer Post and held with two pins. Cross bracing was installed at all interior and exterior corners. The majority of the Posts had bottom repairs over time whereby a section was removed and replaced with a 2-3' section of new wood. The rear left outer Post had been completely removed up to the level of the lower Tie Beam connection and replaced with a piece of pressure treated 6x6. Each Bent originally had a lower Tie Beam at the same height but these were cut out and raised to their current position to support the current floor height during remodeling. A supporting block was added under the cut Beams, held in place with two 12" lag bolts, and the Beams were toenailed to the posts using square nails. In some cases the Beams were supported with a 4" x 6" post added against the original Post. In the center of the structure the upper Floor Joists were bearing directly onto a Tie Beam or Connecting Beam. Along the outer wall of the barn the upper Floor Joists were bearing on a 4"x4" beam raised off of the original Beam with 2" by 4" blocks varying in length depending on location to match the height of the raised Tie and Connecting Beams. The lower Floor Joists had been supported on the sill beams by dropping them into half tenons cut into the sills. They were still in existence under the finished floor but had been removed on the side with the poured concrete slab. The lower level of flooring included a slopped section meeting the location of the boarded up door in the center of the front side and appears to be the location of the original entrance. There were currently three layers of flooring: The first layer of 2"x7" softwood, the second 3 1/2" to 5 1/2" wide tongue and groove, and the top layer of 5/8"plywood. There was no King Beam connecting the Bents. Instead the bents were held together with connecting Beams positioned at the same height as the lower Tie Beams and upper Tie Beams and tenoned into the posts with two holding pins. In the case of the joint where the upper Tie Beam met the upper connecting Beams, the Tie Beam was installed first to form the bent, then the pin ends were cut off so that the connecting Beams could meet flush with the bent assembly. 227 SOUTH ST BP-2016-0523 GIs#: COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS Map:Block: 38B -073 CITY OF NORTHAMPTON Lot: -001 PERSONS CONTRACTING WITH UNREGISTERED CONTRACTORS Permit: Building DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE GUARANTY FUND (MGL c.142A) Cat— egorY demolition BUILDING PERMIT Permit# BP-2016-0523 Project# JS-2016-000874 Est.
