The Engineer Group, LLC 20 Bofat Hill Road Chesterfield,MA 01012 fastened to the posts for uplift as well, per the details in the photos. The rafters and posts at the exterior walls, we feel do not carry significant enough uplift to warrant tie downs as existing fastening, and dead load should counteract uplift at this region. The solar panels should be mounted on a rail system with max"L" foot spacng of 48" o.c. measured along the rails to fasten through the roofing into every other rafter. Rails will be running perpendicular to the rafters. The 48" spacing should be verified with the rail manufacturer. The rail system, and panels should be rated for the spacings at 40 psf ground snow load. Fastening of L feet, for uplift should be done per the rail, panel, and metal roof system manufacturers recommendations for 90 mph 3 sec gust wind in addition to the snow load. On the exterior of the roof, there is a metal ridge cap missing which will allow water intrusion under the metal and into the roof. This will affect the integrity of the roof structure in short time,if left unattended. The ridge cap should be installed, and we suggest the roof material be unspected and sealed appropriately at ay locations necessary before installation of the solar panels. We have not done a complete wind analysis on the building,as this is uncommon for buildings in this wind zone, and building location. We have also not verified anything below the attic level. We believe this proposal is conservative given the condition, age of the structure, and with the strength of existing members likely in excess of what we have used in calculations. This proposal is not to be considered final until it has both the engineers seal, and the final approval from the building department having local jurisdiction. " Jad,LLEN r i11VIL The Engineer Group,LLC NO 46578 570-263-7296 Av 9 $S'ONAL K4 12/11/2015 'i The Engineer Group, LLC 20 Bofat Hill Road Chesterfield,MA 01012 Date:12/11/2015 To:Ed Stempniewicz,Pioneer Solar Energy Re/Project: 184 South St,Northampton,MA 01060;roof retrofit for addition of solar panels. Ed, You asked The Engineer Group LLC to do a roof anlysis for the installation of solar panels at the above referenced address. After the site visit for the above referenced project,I am proposing the following as a roof upgrade for the solar panel installation. According to the Massachusetts State Residential code,an acceptable standard for snow load in the area of the home is 40 psf ground snow load. For this roof, you proposed a flat panel array where the panels would lie parallel to each roof surface in plane with the roof,on the southeast and southwest faces. This configuration adds to the dead load of the roof, and does not significantly affect the snow load contribution to the roof. The Massachusetts building code references ASCE7- 05 as a standard to calculate loading, which allows roof rafters to be evaluated using the ground snow load as the unbalanced condition loading. The unbalanced load is the worst case in this instance. The attached calculations reflect this loading. The roof is a 4 sided hip,mor or less a square, and hips converge at the center. The roof appears to have been replaced some time after the original building was constructed as evidence by mill sawn lumber in the rafters and hips, resting on hand hewn timber frame posts and beams.I would estimate the roof rafters and hips as early 1900's,possibly earlier, and the supporting timbers to be much older. The roof is framed with heavy posts supporting horizontal beams in two concentric rectangles supporting the rafters, and hip rafters. The beams are located at the exterior wall, and the second supporting rectangle at approximate mid point of the rafters.A center post also supports the interior ends of the hip rafters only where they converge at the center. The rafters are adequate to support the imposed snow load, and dead load of the roof with solar panels. The hip beams are also adequate to support their span. The main beams at the exterior appear adequate,as they are supported by the walls below at about 24"o.c.stud spacing in addition to the timber posts. The mid point beam at the South-East facing side, located nearest the access hatch fails calculation for current snw loads by 48%.This is assuming the allowable strength values are approaching the best lumber available today.Though the existing material may be stronger than the best available today,we can not tell for sure so it would be conservative to reinforce the South-east beam which measures 6.5"x6.5"with bracing descrived in the attached Photo 1. The ends of this beam already have bracing installed when the building was built.Only the center post is required to have additional(2)braces installed, one on each side of the post to the beam above. The Southwest beam, nearest the chimney, has shorter spans, and is also a double stacked beam of similar size. The double beam has existing random sized spacers(shim blocking)added between the beams to provide contact between the two stacked beams. This existing blocking should be secured,so it can not be displaced,as the attic area is used for utilities access. Securing details for blocking is shown in Photo 2 attached. Since the solar panels are fastened for uplift to the rafters,we feel it is necessary to fasten the rafters to the midpoint beams more securely that the existing toe nails provide. The rafters should be tied to the mid point beams with fasteners shown in the photos. The mid point beams should be I I l City of Northampton 212 Main Street,Northampton, MA 01060 Solid Waste Disposal Affidavit In accordance of the provisions of MGL c 40, S54, I acknowledge that as a condition of the building permit all debris resulting from the construction activity governed by this Building Permit shall be disposed of in a properly licensed solid waste disposal facility, as defined by MGL c 111, S 150A.
