Re: James Roberts, 96 Straw Ave, Florence, MA: Structural assessment and reinforcement
detail of existing roof to support proposed PV and Thermal solar panel arrays.
On 10122/15 we conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the
proposed PV and thermal solar panel arrays. The 2-story, 28'x 44' hipped roof house was
constructed in 1927. The rafters are full dimension 2x6 at 24" on-center spanning 13'-8" with a 7/12
roof slope. The hip rafters are full dimension M and span approximately 19'. Full dimension 2x6
attic floor joists, at 16" on-center, spanning 14', are attached to full dimension 2x4 exterior wall
studs and supported on a bearing wall in the middle and running the 44' length of the house. There
is a similar bearing wall on the first floor as well. A 2A plate is attached to the top of the wall studs
and the 2x6 rafters are attached to the plate. Three (3)thermal solar panels, at 91 lbs each with
fluid, will be mounted on the west side of the south roof and 13 PV solar panels, at 37 lbs each, are
proposed on the remaining area of the 44' long south roof. Due to the hip roof layout the length of
the ridge is approximately 16'.
The south full length 2x6 rafters need to be reinforced by installing a 2x4 kneewall located 2'-6` in
from the exterior wall to reduce the span of the rafters. The vertical 2x4 can be attached to the
sides of the rafter with 2 —21/2" TimberLok screws and toe screwed to a 2- 2A plate that has been
attached to the top of the floor joists. The 2x4 plate needs to be doubled because the joist are 16"
o,c. and the rafters are 24" o.c. The south hip rafters will need to be reinforced as shown below:
