An integrative approach to design engineering and site planning

From: David Vreeland,P.E.

Re: Al Hough, 33 Valley St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house and
garage roofs to support proposed solar arrays.
On 8/10/15, we conducted a site visit to investigate the roof framing of the house and garage in the
areas of the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 2-story house was built in 1900. The rafters
are full dimensioned 2x4 rafters installed at 20" on-center, spanning 10'-6" with a 6/12 roof pitch
and appear to be hardwood. The south rafters under the proposed four(4) solar panels need to be
reinforced to limit deflection during full snow load. Reinforce the rafters with a vertical 2x4
located 2' in from the exterior wall screwed to the side of the 2x4 rafter with 2—2'/2"TimberLok
screws and toe screwed to the top ceiling joist or to a 2x4 plate installed on top of the ceiling
joists.
The 12'-6"x 20' garage is framed with full dimensioned 2x4 rafters installed at 24" on-center,
spanning 6', with an 8/12 roof pitch. A 12' long platform has been install tying the rafters together
and a 2x4 collar tie has been installed 2' in from the garage door gable end side.
I have done the necessary engineering calculations and reviewed the mounting details for the
proposed PV solar arrays. Based on a PV panel unit weight of 37± lbs, with the attachment points
of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one
rafter, the reinforced roof framing of the house and the existing garage rafters are adequate to
support the proposed PV solar arrays and the current MA State Building Code requirement for
snow load.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.
