house roof to support proposed solar arrays.
On 7/7/15, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the
proposed PV panel installations. The 2-story,hipped roof house, was constructed in 2003. The
existing rafters are 2x10 installed at 16" on-center, spanning 15'-6", with a roof pitch of 12/12.
The hip rafters are 2— 14" LVL. There is potential for snow to slide off the panels onto a lower,
shallow pitch roof and part of a first floor deck area below. The ceiling/roof of the lower roof is a
cathedral ceiling, but the architectural plans indicate 2x8 rafters at 16" on-center, spanning 10'-6".
The lower roof has adequate strength to support the additional snow, up to 70 psf snow load.
However, it is suggested that snow guards be installed below the solar panels on the upper roof to
reduce the possible wear on the shingles on the lower roof and increase the safety of the deck
below.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar arrays. Based on a PV panel unit
weight of 37±lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and
staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is adequate to support
the proposed PV arrays.
