ROOF-MOUNTED SOLAR ARRAY DEAD WEIGHT LOADING CALCULATION
OVERVIEW
Project Name LANDER GRINSPOON ACADEMY -SOUTH ROOF
Address NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts
The flushed to the roof solar array being installed consists of an array of 147 modules(PORTRAIT orientation)at a 4.00:12 pitch and
a roof mounting system. The mounting system includes a series of L-feet on Ecofasten Quikfoot and all metal flashing that represent
discrete points of contact with the roof structure. Each support is secured to the top chord of the engineered roof trusses via two GRK

To summarize, in our opinion, the past roof performance to date has shown the roof to

Re: Grinspoon Academy(Salomon Schechter School), Prospect St., Northampton
GZA File No. 02.0172356.00 T2
Dear Mr. Krezmien,
At your request GZA has reviewed the information you provided on the roof structure
at the Grinspoon Academy(Solomon Schechter School), at 257 Prospect Street,
Northampton, MA. The purpose of this review was to provide an opinion as to the
372',Vest Street,Suiteoo structure's ability to support a proposed rooftop photovoltaic system. You have also
Keene,NH 03431
603.28 3 0300 provided a catalog cut on the proposed photovoltaic (PV) panels. Both the roof
structure information and the information on the proposed roof and the PV panels are
attached to this letter for reference.
In our opinion, the roof system will adequately support the proposed PV panels. We
base this opinion on several assumptions.
The roof is framed with wood trusses with 2x6 top and bottom chords and 2x4 webs.
Shop drawings for the original trusses are not available. The photographs and reports
you have provided suggest the roof and structure to be in good condition and
performing well.
We assume that the panels will be installed parallel the existing roof, eliminating any
additional wind load. The PV panels will be oriented to the south and we assume that
the PV panels will shed snow better than the asphalt shingle roof, due to melting and
smooth surface. Further, the smooth surface and melting effect of the PV panels will
serve to decrease the snow load that the roof system will experience. The information
provided indicates that the PV system will weigh approximately 2.8 psf. This additional
load is less than 1o%of the snow load that the roof system was designed to resist.
