P.E. Vreeland Design Associates Re: Richard Carnes, 277 Audubon Rd, Leeds, MA: Structural assessment of existing house and garage roofs to support proposed solar arrays. On 3/6/15, we conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV panel installations. The cape style house was constructed in 1965 and the garage at a later date. The existing house rafters are 2x6 installed at 16" on-center, spanning 12'-6"with a roof pitch of 10/12 for the main roof with a supporting kneewall and a shed dormer with 2x6 rafters installed 16" on-center, spanning 1 1'-9" with a 2.75/12 pitch. 2x6 ceiling joist tie the dormer rafters back to the main house rafters. Five (5) solar panels will be mounted on the dormer roof. The roof framing of the 24' wide attached garage are 2x8 installed at 16" on-center, spanning 12', with a roof pitch of 10/12. 2x8 floor joists are attached to the rafter tails and prevent the roof from spreading. 15 solar panels will be mounted to garage roof. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of 371 lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV arrays on both the dormer and garage roofs.
