The system can be activated manually through the use of manual pull stations. The system shall be activated automatically via heat detector, duct smoke detector, or flow switch, or Fire Suppression System monitor. The system can also be activated automatically via smoke detector. The system shall initiate the fire alarm sequence of events. Initiation of the fire alarm sequence of events will immediately and simultaneously activate all horns and visual units in the building to notify occupants, and perform all activities as programmed, including annunciator interaction. The red exterior strobe shall be engaged. The Fire Alarm control panel shall send an alarm signal via a digital 2-line auto-dialer to the 24-hour UL listed monitoring station. The fire alarm control panel will also signal the Fire Alarm Master Box and sequentially the appropriate responders including the Town of Northampton Fire Department. The Fire Alarm System reset button returns the system to its normal state. Display messages shall provide operator assurance of the sequential steps as they occur. The Fire Alarm Control Panel is equipped with a 24-hour battery back up. The Fire Alarm Control Panel is equipped with visible and audible signals to indicate alarm and trouble conditions. B. In the event of initiation by duct smoke detector, only the corresponding air handling unit shall shut down and all other functions shall be performed as described. 3.0 Test Criteria: All features, devices, components, and modes of operation shall be tested for acceptance in accordance with the code and NFPA 72. Smoke detectors shall be activated using a magnet per the manufacturer's recommendations. All pull stations shall be activated by opening and upon activation of each device; the Fire Alarm System shall be checked for proper operation including annunciation at the Fire Alarm Control Panel and transmission of an alarm signal to the Fire Department. Proper operation in the emergency power mode shall be demonstrated as well as a check of supervision circuits for opens and shorts. *** End of Basis of Design Narrative L&S 1728 Page 6 D. System connected smoke detectors are existing at the fire alarm control panel and as required by code. The building is fully sprinklered, however additional smoke detection is maintained in this project to provide an additional degree of protection to the building. Activation of any system smoke will initiate the fire alarm system sequence of events. E. Manual pull stations are existing. No new manual pull stations are required to be installed as part of this project. Manual pull stations are required to be located within 5 feet of each exit door and at all entry points leading to an egress stairway and shall initiate the fire alarm system sequence of events. Existing devices will be relocated as necessary to accommodate new room layout. F. Fire alarm system notification and signaling devices in this building will include the following features: 1. Audio notification devices in the form of Horn/Strobes to be installed or relocated as shown on plans. It is the intent of this design that audible notification devices achieve sound pressure levels of 15 dba above ambient sound levels in all areas of the building in compliance with chapter 4-3 of NFPA 72. 2. Visual notification devices in the form of Horn/Strobes and Strobe only appliances to be installed or relocated as shown on the plans. It is the intent of this design that visual notification devices achieve appropriate coverage for public areas in compliance chapter 4-4 of NFPA 72. G. System connected duct smoke detectors are existing at all HVAC units where required as dictated by air handling capacity and applicable code. Activation of duct smoke detector will initiate the fire alarm system sequence of events. H. Tamper switches and flow switches are existing where required to serve fire protection equipment as shown on the construction documents. I. Heat Detection Devices associated with the old zone type Gamewell Fire Alarm Control Panel in the original building are existing. Heat detectors have been provided with Addressable Interface Modules, at the original Gamewell panel location, and connected to the new control panel. Activation of a heat detection device will initiate the fire alarm system sequence of events. J. The server room located in the old building is protected by an Autoplulse 422R Ansul system, monitored by the Notifier Panel, for additional protection. The server room located in the building addition is protected by a Scorpio Fire Suppression System, monitored by the Notifer Panel, for additional protection. K. This project does not include any special design considerations or anticipated deviations from the code requirements. L&S 1728 Page 5 A. The fire sprinkler system modifications are to be designed in accordance with NFPA 13, 2007. B. All spaces are to be provided with sprinklers specifically listed for the specific applications in accordance with NFPA 13, 2007. 3.0 Equipment A. Pipe is to be schedule 40 black steel or CPVC, per NFPA 13, for 1"through 3". 4.0 Design Criteria A. All renovated general spaces are designed for light hazard occupancy. The density is .10/1500 square feet with a 100 gpm hose allowance. 5.0 Test Criteria A. All sprinklers and standpipe systems shall be tested where required by NFPA 13 and NFPA 25. B. Hydrostatic Test 1. Hydrostatically test the entire interior piping system at not less than 200 psi (13.6 bars) for 2 hours and provide a test certificate for said test. SECTION 5- FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS 1.0 Basis of Design A. New fire alarm system work associated with this project includes the removal and reinstallation of (3) smoke detection devices, (1) manual pull station & (2) horn/strobe notification appliances. Also included in the scope of work is the installation of(3) strobe only devices. B. The existing fire alarm system features an addressable Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) by Notifier Model #AFP-400. The FACP is located in the basement level mechanical room of the addition building. The emergency (battery-backup) power supply has been sized to be adequate for both 24 hours of monitoring and a minimum of 15 minutes of alarm and is located at the FACP. C. A fire alarm annunciator is located at the entry vestibule from Keyes Street. This is the Fire Department primary response point and also features an exterior red strobe interlocked to the alarm, key box, and exterior master box. Also located in this vicinity is the sprinkler connection and electric bell.
