Glazed door — Use Thermatru 'Smoothstar' — ideally with triple glazed glazing that can be provided by the window manufacturer directly to Thermatru for installation at the factory. 9. Garage door: I looked at "flat panel garage doors" http://www.houzz.com/Flat-panel-garage-door PS these images of the "Nepean Exterior" show a mix of HardiPanel and corrugated metal — which might be a nice combination to achieve the splash-zone protection and a colorful paneled exterior. 10. Epoxy paint over concrete floor: `Corotech' polyamide epoxy coating V-400 or similar produced by Benjamin Moore 11. Color stain for interior OSB wall paneling: Minwax make a water-based stain product in a range of colors that can be mixed to achieve any color. Apply a couple of clear coats of polyurethane finish over. 12. Heating and cooling: Provide a single port air sourced heat pump unit with the exterior compressor/condenser unit wall mounted to the western wall (if acceptable within the set-back) and the interior air handling unit wall mounted at 7' AFL at a location to be determined by Owner. Route condensate drain from the interior unit through the wall to the exterior. Use Fujitsu unit selected based on heat loss computation by mechanical contractor. www.fujitsu-heatpumps.com 13. Ventilation: Provide a 100 cfm± Panasonic through-the-wall exhaust fan with timer control 14. Power: Provide a sub-panel from the existing residence. Capacity of the service to be determined by Electrician in conjunction with Owner once a list of electrical loads has been constructed. 15. Lighting: layout as shown on lighting plan. (The intent is to provide a very flexible lighting solution that enables the Owner to suspend their own pendant fixtures and plug them into the provide switched receptacles.) cold ham andh art man.com 49 S. Pleasant Street, Suite 301 Amherst, MA 01002 413.549.3616 Coldham&Hartman architects To: Keri Smith and Jeff Pitcher From: Bruce Coldham Date: March 315' 2015 Cc: Hans Dalhaus Project Name: New Studio Project No: 14-22 Subject: Specification notes for materials and products to be incorporated The following are materials and products that I think may be considered for the new studio. 1. Siding material: Without any substantial roof overhang, I encourage you to use a metal siding panel and a really carefully installed weather barrier behind. The splash zone at the base of the exterior wall will be a stress location for most siding materials, but I think that colored aluminum will hold up. 2. Roofing material: Corrugated metal is what I imagine will look best here, and be most economical. It could be straight galvanized steel, but that will not look as good in ten-plus years as a colored (Kynar paint coated) product. We need to pay attention to the rake edges to get a sharp look using the corrugated material. 3. Air Barrier materials: Tape the OSB exterior sheathing panels using the Huber 'Zip' system. 4. Weather Barrier(drainage plane) materials: With furring creating a circulating air space, use a conventional housewrap such as Typar, that it is well taped and sealed at window and door openings. Use Vycor tape 5. Rigid Insulation (below grade): Use an expanded polystyrene EPS type IX (nine) R value of 4.2 or greater per inch. 6. Rigid Insulation (above grade): Use a fiber-faced polyisocyan u rate panel achieving an aged R value of 6.2 or greater per inch. 7. Windows: Triple glazed `pultruded' fiberglass framed windows are probably the best option from a thermally high performing standpoint — See those produced by Alpen 545 Series through Pinnacle. Glazing: tri-pane 3 mm glass with "warm edge" spacers, or two 3 mm glass with interior'Heat Mirror' mylar film. Two Argon-gas filled cavities. Unit U-value: 0.19; SHGC of glass: highest available (50%or better); Colors: Interior to be WHITE; exterior to be BROWN (or custom color for 10% more) They routinely make custom sizing, so the odd-shaped fixed units would not be such a problem. Contact Chris Bailey; Chris @pinnaclewindowsolutions.net Otherwise, if you decide to fall back to double glazing, I suggest that you try the Marvin Integrity coldhamandhartman.cor,) 49 S.
