The project included adding a shed dormer to the rear of the residence which in turn required a new ridge beam to be installed. to detail 1 on drawing S3 the stew ridge beam is a W 14,00 steel beam with a wood nailer bolted to the top flange. You have asked if the ridge board is structural and if it holes could he drilled in the. board to vcnl the shed dormer rafter space. Based upon the above information it is my opinion that the steel beam is the structural element in the design to support the roof rafters and that the ridge board is there as a nailer for the roof rafters. In theory the ridge board is not even rcguired i.e. the rafters could have been oflket and nailed or they' could have been butted together and then toe nailed. Sincc the ridge board is not sti-tidural it �Wuld be acceptable to drill holes wq required to allow cross ventilation of the rafter spaces.
