Box 319•Ashfield, MA 01330 268-3265 Dear Mr. McCarthy; Frank Sienk,6wicz, the Northampton building inspector, told me he spoke to you Friday, May 1 about the possibility of a "staff claification" that would allow us to build stairs to a proposed 3rd floor shed dormer for a childs bedroom.The family understands the stairs would have less than normal headroom, and is eager to go ahead with the project. They have visited with us an almost indentical size shed dormer 3rd floor bedroom with existing "grandfathered" stairs that we built in Northampton and were very happy with the ( just code) , 713" ceiling height and general feeling of spaciousness. They have also visited houses of very similar design to theirs built by the same 1920' s builder on their street where stairs to the 3rd floor were put in the exact location we propose. The closet where we want to start our stairs is quite deep, allowing us to build the main carriage greater than 3 ' wide, but the landing at the bottom, though as wide as the carriage, could only be a little more than 22' deep, 38"x31" total . Also the headroom at the very bottom, (left side of landing) , and very top of the stairs would be less than 61811 , closer to 6'41 . The customers feel as we do that these are small concessions to make for childs bedroom stairs . Hoping you can send the Northampton building inspector staff clarification on this that would allow him to allow us to build. Thanks , x" 0 ` Benton D.
