Re: Melnik Residence, 308 Chesterfield Rd, Westhampton, MA: Structural assessment of new
garage and sunroom roofs to support proposed solar arrays.
I have reviewed the building plans and garage roof truss design for the proposed PV panel
installation. The garage dual pitch roof trusses have been designed for 50 psf roof snow load with
10 psf dead load on the top chord and are installed at 24" on-center, with a 6/12 pitch on the long
south side and 9/12 on the short north side. Standing seam metal roofing has been installed. The
sunroom hip roof has 2x10 rafters at 16" on-center, spanning 10'-6", with a 6/12 pitch. 2x6 ceiling
joists have been installed approximately 12" up from the top plate. The plans note a 1%"x H-7/8"
LVL hip rafter, however, it appears that a 2x12 has been installed.
The PV panels will be clamped to the standing seam metal roofing. Based on a PV panel unit
weight of approximately 37 Ibs, the roof framing in both the garage and sunroom are adequate to
support the proposed PV arrays.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.
