Per your inspection and layout plan, the roof is a gable structure framed with full 2" x 6" rafters spaced at 16" on center and spanning 13'horizontally from the exterior wall to ridge. The roof is sloped at a 8:12 pitch. The Massachusetts Amendment to the 2009 International Building Code snow map indicates the design ground snow load in Northampton is 55 pounds per square foot(psf),which translates to a flat roof snow load of 38.5 psf. Since the roof slopes at an 8:12 pitch, the design snow load can be reduced to 35 psf.The existing dead load of the rafters, planking and shingles is approximately 10 psf and the addition of the solar panels results in a total dead load of 14 psf. For this evaluation, it was assumed the wood members are typical spruce-pine-fir mix, No. 2 or better. Our calculations indicate that the 2" x 6" rafters are stressed to approximately 92% of their total bending capacity under the code-required snow loading, new solar panels and existing dead loads. Therefore the new panels can be installed without reinforcement of the existing framing. Please note that the evaluation was based on the rafters measuring a full 2" x 6". Nominal 2x6 members(1.5" x 5.5")are not sufficient and would require reinforcement. The above opinion is based on the above information provided by you and the assumption that the framing members are in sound condition. Any deviations from the above criteria discovered during the course of the work must be immediately brought to our attention. Please call me with any questions. Thomas Leonard, P.E.
