We received a call from the Department of Public Safety last night regarding your property at 25
Elizabeth Street. The Northampton Fire Department responded to reports of a grill fire on the second
floor porch. It appeared to fire personnel that the third floor is being used as a separate dwelling unit,
and that there appears to be only one means of egress from that dwelling unit.
The Massachusetts State Building Code, 780 CMR Chapter 10, §1004 and §1010 requires that
each dwelling unit have two separate and independent means of egress, leading directly to grade.
Additionally, Chapter 1, §121 requires that a building official investigate any report of a dangerous
situation. I will be visiting the property this morning, accompanied by the Fire Inspector.
Please contact this department as soon as possible to arrange an inspection of this property. My
