NORTHAMPTON ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
Decision on Application of Coca-Cola
Bottling Company of Northampton
July 7, 1981
The Board of Appeals met in the City Council Chambers at 5 :45 p.m.,,
Jul 7 1981, to render a decision on the request of the Coca-Cola
.__BD±,t1inq Com an for a special permit to install an oversized
sign on their building in the Industrial Park. Present were
William Brandt, Acting Chairman; Marianne Zurn and Peter Laband.
On a motion made and seconded, the minutes of the public hearing
of June 17 , 1981, were accepted and the reading was waived.
In the discussion of the petition, Dr. Laband found that the
architecture of the building is such that it is much larger
than other buildings located in the Industrial Park; that the
building is located on land that is specifically designated as
an industrial park and that no one from Northampton would see
the proposed sign on a daily basis due to the fact that the
sign faces Interstate 91. He concluded that because of the
architecture of the building and because of its location in an
industrial park located on an interstate highway, he would vote
to approve the petition.
Mr. Brandt found that the governing guideline in this matter is
whether or not the proposed sign would be in the "public interest.' "
He concluded that the sign would be in the public interest because
Coca-Cola is a major tenant in the Industrial Park and the sign
would call attention to the fact that the Industrial Park has been
able to attract an international company as a tenant.
Ms. Zurn reiterated her findings made in the meeting of June 17 ,
1981. She concluded that there was nothing special or unique in
the architecture of the building that would demand an oversized
sign and that the public interest in promoting a local business
would be adequately served by a standard sign which, she believed,;
could easily be seen from Interstate 91 due to the proximity of
the Coca-Cola building to the highway. She felt that the public
interest was varied and that the interest in promoting a local
tenant must be balanced with the interest of the public in perserv'ing
the scenic drive on Interstate 91.
On a motion made and seconded, the matter was voted upon. Mr.
Brandt and Dr. Laband voted to grant the petition; Ms. Zurn voted
to deny the petition. The Acting Chairman ruled that the petitions
was denied, and on a motion made and secgnded, the meeting was
adjourned.
