It is my understanding that your company wishes to add a second floor for office space onto the existing first floor offices. This area consists of block walls with a wooden ceiling joist and decking system. The following conditions were observed: 1. Ceiling joist maximum span is 12 feet 8 inches 2. Decking joist species is SPF(Spruce Pine Fir) 3. Ceiling joist are number 2 grade 4. On center spacing of the joists are 16 inches on center S. No ceiling joists were notched,tapered, or with holes greater than'/.of its depth Based on the above information which was provided by the contractor Mr. Randal Roberts,my analysis shows that the existing ceiling joist will be able to handle a typical office live load of 50 pounds per square foot and IS pounds per square foot dead load, except in the area where the joists span 12 feet 8 inches. Within this area we suggest that every other joist be doubled up, These double joists must be nailed together with 3 rows of 124 common nails on 12 inches on center distance.
