Vreeland Design Associates Re: Kevin Lake, 35 Washington Ave,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing roofs to support proposed solar arrays. I have reviewed the details of the two existing roof framing sections in the areas of the proposed PV panel installations. The existing rafters in the older main house are full dimension 2x5 installed at 24" on-center, spanning 11.5' at approximately a 6/12 pitch. The rafters in the newer section are 2x10, installed at 16" on-center, spanning 13.5' at a 6/12 pitch. The existing asphalt shingles will remain on both roof areas. The older 2x5 roof framing will need to be reinforced to limit deflection under snow load conditions. Install a 2x4 plate on top of the attic floor joists within 12" of the location of the bearing wall below. Install 2x4 bracing with the top of the 2x4 located 2' horizontal from the ridgeline and screwed with 2-2'/2"TimberLok screws to the side of the south rafters. Toe screw the bottom of the 2x4 brace to the 2x4 plate with a single screw. Brace each rafter that the array is attached to. The 2x10 rafters do not need to be reinforced. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of approximately 44 lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the proposed reinforced 2x5 roof framing and the existing 2x10 roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV array.
