President, Dr. Clarence Welti P.E.; P.C. 7 The material shall be compacted to at least 95% of modified optimum density (ASTM 1557-D). 6.1 There should be at least 9" of controlled sand and gravel fill conforming to the above gradation placed directly beneath the slab on grade. •■ 6.2 A vapor barrier is required below slabs on grade. 7.0 Regarding earthwork and pavements the soils are in OSHA Class C and excavations,which are not shored and exceed 5 feet in height, must be cut back to slopes, not exceeding 1.5H to l.OV (i.e., 34° or less from the horizontal) 7.1 There should be at least 10" of Gravel Fill beneath the new pavement sections. This will generally be part of the imported fills which are required to achieve the proposed new pavement grades. w 7.2 The recommended pavement sections are as follows: Under Passenger Cars: 3.0" Bituminous Concrete on 6" of Crushed Aggregate Subbase Under Truck or Bus Access: 4.0" Bituminous Concrete on 8" of Crushed Aggregate Subbase 7.2.1.Concrete pavements in Truck Access Areas shall include 8"thick concrete on 8"of Crushed Aggregate Subbase. 7.3 Sidewalk areas shall have at least 9" of compacted gravel, conforming to section 6.0 above. 7.4 Compaction requirements are as follows: Under buildings 95+% of modified optimum density (ASTM 1557D) Under pavements 95+% of modified optimum density Under landscaped areas 90+% of modified optimum density 7.5 Regarding underlay of piping and trench backfill,the underlay should include at least 6"of No.8 stone on a geotextile and the backfill material shall conform the gradation in section 6.0 above. 8.0 Regarding lighting pole supports typically these would be a shaft type.Based on the possibility of localized soft areas,it is recommended that a spread footing tied to piers be used to prevent tilting of poles. Loading on the footings should be maintained below 1500 psf. 9.0 This report has been prepared for specific application to the subject project in accordance with generally accepted soil and foundation engineering practices. The structural frame shall be subject to settlement less than a maximum of V and differentially less than 1/2 the maximum subsidence. 2.The foundation must address the seismic requirement of the building code. Addressing possible soil liquefaction is a considered a part of this requirement. !* 3. The slab on grade (or supported slab) shall not subside more than 1/2"in excess of the structural frame or bearing walls. The above performance assumptions are based on requirements for similar structures.If the owner, the architect, or the engineer have other criteria; the writer should be notified in writing. 5.1 Regarding item 2(MA code requirements for SEISMIC DESIGN)the soils below the water table have blow counts generally above threshold values (below which soil liquefaction can occur during earthquakes).There are locally low blow counts,but these are within the varved silt and clay stratum which would not be prone to liquefaction.The"S"factor for the subject construction should be 1.5, based on a soil profile. The peak velocity related acceleration, A, is 0.12. 5.2 Regarding foundation type, the foundations for the BIG Y addition and improvements to the existing stores can be spread footings. The foundations can be placed on the natural soils, at least 2.5 feet below existing grades (to be below any frost disturbed soils), or on a controlled fills placed after the removal of existing fills. The controlled fill (other than at the Big Y) should conform to section 6.0 below,and should extend laterally outside the foundation for a distance equal to the depth of fill below foundations.As stated in section 3.3.1 (above),the Big Y will require much of the fill to be foam concrete,which can achieve a compressive strength of at least 75 psi(5 Tons/sf).The preparation will include the initial removal of at least 12" of existing soil in areas of the footprint, where the proposed floor is more than 2 feet above the existing grade. Laterally this process should be carried out to at least 3 times the required fill depths outside the proposed building footprint.The exterior walls could be placed at this time(atop 8" of No. 8 stone on a geotextile) or atop the foam concrete. The foam concrete would be carried up to within 18"of the proposed slab on grade, and at the exterior of the building to within 18"of proposed pavement grades.It should be noted that the foam concrete could be cut neat for placement of the walls. The actual limits of the above requirements can be defined when a grading plan is available. Interior footing should be placed on a 6"layer of sand atop the foam concrete.Allowable loading on the controlled fill(whether on gravel or on sand over foam concrete)can be 1.5 Tons/sf.This can be increased by 1/3 for wind or seismic loading. 5.2.1 At the some areas of the Big Y and existing store improvements footings may fall in the silt layer,which is sensitive to remolding.It is recommended that footings be placed on a minimum 8" layer of No. 8 (3/8")stone,over a geotextile. Allowable loading on the stone can be 1.5 Tons/sf. 4 P" Area Adjacent to Retail Plaza(borings B-16 thru B-18) on Bituminous Concrete to 3" to 4" Possible FILL; fine to coarse SAND, little Gravel, trace to little Silt to 1 to 3 feet, medium compact Locally (see borings B 17 &B 18); fine to medium SAND, trace to some Silt 26+feet Locally (see boring B16); varved SILT, little to some Clay, medium stiff 3.2 The ground water table, where evident in the borings, was as shallow as 6 feet below grade. The varved Silt/Clay acts as a barrier layer. Based on the soil sample water contents, the normal water table would be just above the top of the varved Silt/Clay stratum. 3.3 The varved Silt/Clay is of some concern,particularly as regards potential consolidation,where significant areal loading is applied to this stratum.The glacial soils in the geologic lake Connecticut were in some cases normally consolidated and in other cases over-consolidated either with ice or soil, which was subsequently eroded. The consolidation coefficient (Cr) for the over-consolidated soils is normally about 1/3 of that for normally consolidated soils. Based on the results of the consolidation test and water contents,it does appear that the silt/clay stratum at the subject site was normally consolidated. This condition appears to be present over much of the glacial lake north of Northampton, based on prior studies in Northampton and in Greenfield. 3.3.1 At the proposed Big Y footprint the existing grades vary from Elev. 146 at the east end to Elev. 152 at the west end..This could result in superimposed loadings on varved Silt/Clay of as much 800 psf.With a C,of 0.25 this could result in potential consolidation of this stratum of 4" at the east end of the proposed Big Y and zero at the west end of the store. This can be addressed with one of the following procedures: 1. Surcharge with up to 6 feet of soil at the east end of the building and for at least 1 year prior and as much as 2 years before building.This consolidation process could be accelerated with wick drains to permit sufficient consolidation in 2 to 4 months. 2. Place foam (light weight) concrete (unit weight of 30 to 35 pcf) over those parts of the slab where the proposed slab grade is 2+ feet above the existing grades, plus perform an initial excavation in the area of at least 12" to provide a net superimposed loading of less than 300 psf from the filling. 3.3.1.a From a practical standpoint the second option appears to be the logical choice for assurance that the building can proceed as soon the fill is in place. 3 as The new store will be located generally to rear of the existing Big Y store,which will be demolished. A portion of the existing Big Y is located within the proposed new store footprint.The existing store appears to have a floor level at Elev.150±.The existing pavements will be reconstructed and the area at the existing Big Y will be paved over for parking. There may also be some additions or improvements to the existing retail structure to the south of the Big Y store. 2.1 The existing grades at the proposed new Big Y footprint range from about Elev.146 to Elev.152. The proposed finished floor level will be at Elev.151.8.The grades in the existing parking areas and access drives range from about Elev.145 to Elev.168. Eight borings (B-1 thru B-8) were drilled at the proposed new Big Y footprint. Two of these borings were drilled to a depth of 61.5 feet and the remainder to 21.5 feet. 2. Seven borings (B-9 thru B-15) were drilled in areas where new or reconstructed pavements are proposed. These borings were drilled to a depth of 11.5 feet. 3.Three borings (B-16 thru B-18) were drilled to the side and rear of the existing retail plaza. These are presumed to be for possible additions or improvements to the Plaza. Those borings were drilled to a depth of 26.5 feet. The boring locations are shown on attached plan.The subject borings were drilled by Clarence Welti Associates, Inc. and sampling was conducted by this firm solely to obtain indications of subsurface conditions as part of a geotechnical exploration program. No services were performed to evaluate subsurface environmental conditions. 1.1 Laboratory Testing included 10 grain size gradation tests, 27 water contents, and one consolidation test on a sample from the varved silt/clay stratum.
