903. 1.1 (1 .c) TESTING CRITERIA
SECTION 1 -Testing Criteria
FIRE SPRLN—KLER SYSTEM
Wet Sprinkler/Standpipe
Hydrostatically test at a pressure of 200 psi for two hours without a loss in pressure.
Conduct forward flow test of backfow preventer at a rate of 600 GPM.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
A full test of the fire alarm system shall include werking tests of:water flow switches,tamper switches,
pull stations,and indicating appliances.
All tests shall be performed in accordance widt:manufacturer's requirements and'-,IFPA 7
Fire department shall witness test of fire alarm commuiucatcr and receipt of fire alarm signal at station
shall be tested.

SECTION 2-Approval Requirements
Approval of local authorities is required.

All test certificates; as required by NTPA 13 and 72,are required to be provided by avery fire protection
contractor.

All sprnkler system shut-downs require fire department notification Sprink:er systems must be
returned to service as quickly as possible and coordinated with the requirements cf the fire deparment.
The sprinkler system is a dry system which allows full protection while spaces are not occupied with
tenants.
903. 1.1 (1.b) SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
SECTION 1
STAN-DPIPE SYSTEM
System operates automatically upon the opening of a Ere deparment valve.
Operational Sequence:
I The flow from afire hose valve will close the contacts of a vane type or pressure type flow switch.
2. Closed contact on the flow switch will activate are alarm system(upon 30 second delay)and initiate
the audiovisual devices. (see below)
DRY SPR2-5=R SYSTEMS
The fire sprink:er system operates automatically upon the fusing of a single:ire�-pri-ikler
Operational Sequence.
1. The activation of a single sprinkler will allow the air to ex7aust the system and discharge water.
2 The dry valve will activate the system pressure switch.
3 Closed contact will activate local alarm indication ircluding strobes, hcris and bells.
4 Closed cortac*will send sigral through local alarm panel to central station,central station%-i 11 then
notify fire departmer.t.
FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
Water Flow,Manual Pull Station,or Egress Corridor Smoke Detectors
1. Activation of the fire alarm system into alarm mode can be achieved by sprinkler water flow,manual
pull statior, or smoke detector.
2. Upon alarm activation,the following will occur:
Business occupancy indicating appliance circuit will be activatec
Residential occupancy indicating appliance circuit will be activated
Fire Department will be notified by the control pwiel certrunicator.
Multi-Station Smoke Detection
1 Smoke detection in the Residential units will activate the vocal smoke alarms but will not activate the
building fire alarm system.
2. in the event of fire,if the fire spniiklers within the residential unit are activated,the fall'o, :ire
alarm system will be estivate.

SECTION 4-Fire Protection Systems to be installed
a) Water supply,fire mains and hydrants-the existing city waver supple has been tested with the
following results:
Static: 11 .psi
Residual:95 psi at 9W gpm
Residual. 20 psi at 2,200 gpm
b) Automatic sprinkler systems-complete sprinkler protection is provided. The entire facility is locafwd
on a single dry pipe system.
The sprinkler system must be modified as required to maintain compliance with vFPA 13, 1996
edition when renovated for a tcnart. The following must be evaluated for each new tenant:
SpririLers trust be added,relocated,or remc-.ed as necessary to rr.amLain sonrkl?r coverage. The pipe
size must be venried to iruttre proper water delivery rates. This car.be achieved by hydraulic
calculations if the modification is significant. However, in the event that minor modifications are
made to acccmmodate a light hazard space where the existing system is designed for ordinary hazard
areas,no calculations are necessary. kfajor or unusual modifications to protect a light hazarc space
may require additional hydraulic calculations.
c) Standpipe systems and components-one standpipe riser is provided in the public garage stair.
d) A full fire alarm system is to be provided.
e) I-�fultiple station smoke detection is provided within the residential unit. Smote detectors supollec 1l'
AC power and battery back up will be installed in all rooms.
t) Seismic considerations-all life safety systems are required to incorporate ielsmic design

The intent of this narrative report is to provide a single document that describes the requirements of the fie
protection systems on site The building will contain 6 single-family dwellings. i retail shops. and a pubiic
garage.
The following summarizes the buitding use
The 5 retail shops have individual entrances or.the first floor with access:o the basement. Each retail unit
:s 1600 sq ft on two floors.
There are 5 single-family residences located on the second and third floor above each retail shoo These
units exit to grade on the second floor at the rear of the building
An additional residential urut is located above thc pubiic garage.
The public garage has 5 doors with access from grade level on the first floor. Beneath this space is the
utility room where building utility senices and meters are located.
The building design cntene are based on non-separated use groups(313 1.1 j. The tenant spaces are
separated by 1 hour separations as required by Table 602,
it is anticipated that several budding modifications may occur as new tenants occupy this building. For:his
reason,the fire sprinkler system is designed for rnax:mum flex.,,bihty for:codification while minimizing the
need fcr system shut-down.
