PETER J.McERMN,Health Agent OFFICE OF THE 210 MAIN STREET (413)587-1214 BOARD OF HEALTH --NORTHAMPTON,MA 01060 a T_ FAX(413)587-1264 December 10, 1997 DEC 12 199 WARNING THIS IS AN IMPORTANT NOTICE To: Grecian Corner, 16 Main Street 3'R —T j7 India Palace, 28 Main Street Messa Luna, 7 Strong Avenue `3d Taipei & Tokyo, 18 Main Street - 3A Thai Kitchen, 36 Main Street The Northampton Board of Health is in receipt of a complaint about the dumping of cooking grease and/or mop bucket water into the storm drain at the Strong Avenue(eastern) end of the alley behind the above listed Main Street Restaurants. An inspection of the area has confirmed that there is a buildup of grease in and around the drain in question. For your information, storm drains are not connected to the city sewer system, they are however, directly connected to nearby streams which flow into the Connecticut River, Anything dumped into a storm drain eventually gets into the river. Please be advised that it is a violation of state and federal water pollution control regulations to dispose of any waste in a storm drain. One or more of the restaurants adjacent to the Strong Avenue alley have recently been violating water pollution control regulations by dumping waste grease and/or mop water into the storm drain. This practice must cease immediately. Please inform all of your employees, especially the night cleaning crews, that the dumping of any wastes into the storm drain is strictly prohibited. Old grease should be held in a securely covered container for bulk disposal by a rendering company, and dirty mop water should be poured into a slop sink or toilet. In the future, any restaurant found pouring wastes into the storm drain and violating water pollution control regulations will be subject to severe fines. r^.
