RE: 25 Hancock Street, Northampton
Dear Mr. Verson:
We received a call from the board of health regarding your property at 25
Hancock St. for possible fire code violations. Our inspection revealed that the
current fire alarm system was in trouble. Also numerous hard-wired detectors
were completely disabled in individual units.
This is in violation of state fire codes, specifically Massachusetts General Law
148 section 27A. You are here by notified to restore the system to full operation
with in 7 days. Battery operated detectors are not acceptable, Also by city
ordinance a red strobe light that activates upon the fire alarm activation and a fire
department emergency access key box is required near the main entrance:
A fire alarm work permit needs to be submitted to the fire department. Upon
completion of work an inspection will need to be done for acceptance of the
system. Failure to correct these violations may result in action initiated in the
housing court system. If you have any questions I can be reached at 587-1032.

RE: Code violations at 25 Hancock street Map 32c Lot 230 Zone URC
Dear Mr. Verson,
I was called 25 Hancock Street on Wed Feb. 2nd, by Northampton Fire Department and
C
Northampton, Board of Health Inspectors .
Upon inspection of common areas and two apartments that tenants allowed entry to I
observed several code violations, there are as follows;
1. Hardwired smoke detectors in common areas were inoperational.
E 2. Smoke detectors in two bedrooms we were allowed entry were not
operational. In one bedroom(second floor closest to front staircase)there was
p a hard wired smoke detector not operational and a battery operated smoke
detector also not working.
I, .3. The first and second floors lacked emergency lights and exit signs.
4. The second floor rear staircase has a door swinging the wrong way which
would cause a severe problem for tenants trying to exit in the event of an
emergency.
5. Located on the first floor lobby was a" kitchen area" This area consisted of a
formica counter top with a sink. On the counter top a hot plate, and
microwave appliances were plugged into a"zip strip" which constituted and
I' extreme fire hazard. These were disconnected immediately in my presence.
1 6. There was no posted certificate of inspection as required by 780CMR section
106.
f, 7. There was not posted a Lodging house License as required by the License
Commission City of Northampton.
The smoke detection system must be fixed within 7 days, this system shall be hardwired
not battery operated devices.
Emergency lights and lighted exit signs must be installed within 7 days.
A licensed electrician shall be hired to correct kitchen area with sufficient electrical
i
outlets and smoke detection.
The door swing on second floor rear shall be corrected so as not to impede the egress
from second floor within 7 days.
All work must be done by properly licensed contractors who shall secure all required
I permits and inspections.
