Duggan Fire Chief Notice of Violation February 3, 2005 Mr. Alan Verson 56 Main St. Northampton, MA 01060 RE: 25 Hancock Street, Northampton Dear Mr. Verson: We received a call from the board of health regarding your property at 25 Hancock St. for possible fire code violations. Our inspection revealed that the current fire alarm system was in trouble. Also numerous hard-wired detectors were completely disabled in individual units. This is in violation of state fire codes, specifically Massachusetts General Law 148 section 27A. You are here by notified to restore the system to full operation with in 7 days. Battery operated detectors are not acceptable, Also by city ordinance a red strobe light that activates upon the fire alarm activation and a fire department emergency access key box is required near the main entrance: A fire alarm work permit needs to be submitted to the fire department. Upon completion of work an inspection will need to be done for acceptance of the system. Failure to correct these violations may result in action initiated in the housing court system. INSPECTOR Northampton,MA 01060 Alan Verson 55 Main Street Northampton RE: Code violations at 25 Hancock street Map 32c Lot 230 Zone URC Dear Mr. Verson, I was called 25 Hancock Street on Wed Feb. 2nd, by Northampton Fire Department and C Northampton, Board of Health Inspectors . Upon inspection of common areas and two apartments that tenants allowed entry to I observed several code violations, there are as follows; 1. Hardwired smoke detectors in common areas were inoperational. E 2. Smoke detectors in two bedrooms we were allowed entry were not operational. In one bedroom(second floor closest to front staircase)there was p a hard wired smoke detector not operational and a battery operated smoke detector also not working. I, .3. The first and second floors lacked emergency lights and exit signs. 4. The second floor rear staircase has a door swinging the wrong way which would cause a severe problem for tenants trying to exit in the event of an emergency. 5. Located on the first floor lobby was a" kitchen area" This area consisted of a formica counter top with a sink. On the counter top a hot plate, and microwave appliances were plugged into a"zip strip" which constituted and I' extreme fire hazard. These were disconnected immediately in my presence. 1 6. There was no posted certificate of inspection as required by 780CMR section 106. f, 7. There was not posted a Lodging house License as required by the License Commission City of Northampton. The smoke detection system must be fixed within 7 days, this system shall be hardwired not battery operated devices. Emergency lights and lighted exit signs must be installed within 7 days. A licensed electrician shall be hired to correct kitchen area with sufficient electrical i outlets and smoke detection. The door swing on second floor rear shall be corrected so as not to impede the egress from second floor within 7 days.
