Richard P.Wilk This is a follow-up letter to our telephone conversation of yesterday relative to the smoke
separation around the Nursery area on the Second Floor of the P-2000 Wing at Cooley
Dickinson Hospital.

William M.Barry,P.E. As I mentioned to you, it was my understanding from Ernest Margeson,the former
Ronald G.Stenlund,P.E.
Director of Facilities at Cooley Dickinson Hospital,that the smoke separation of the
Nursery area from the surrounding corridors and Nurses' Station was achieved by making
the suspended acoustical ceiling system within the room smoke-tight with ceiling tile
hold-down clips. Ernie also mentioned to me that this solution to the issue of smoke
separation was discussed with you, as the City's Building Commissioner, and Gordon
Bailey,the State Department of Public Safety Inspector. Since the Local Authority
having jurisdiction can elect to meet Code compliance for specific issues with
compliance alternatives, the J.C.A.H.O. surveyors will accept your decision on this
matter.
It is my understanding that the issue of smoke separation in the Nursery was resolved to
Gordon's and your satisfaction by the use of the Nursery ceiling as the smoke barrier.
If you are comfortable with my description of the above events,the Hospital would
appreciate it if you could acknowledge that in the space below, so that it can document
how this issue was resolved for its upcoming J.C.A.H.O.Accreditation Survey.
