Home – Community – Planet April 5, 2012 Dewey House - Smith College Minutes of Meeting # 4 – April 5, 2012 Present: Charlie Conant (Smith Facilities), Roger Cooney, Ann Ledwell, Jim Small, Tom Lucia (Wright Builders), Laura Fitch and Ian Gasco-Wiggin (Kraus-Fitch Architects), Dino D’Angelo (L&S), Ryan Hellwig (Structural) New Business: Item Description / Discussion 1.4 Schedule and Permitting: • Charlie to submit for “Non-applicability” • Requirements for permit: o Drawings - TEAM (electronic only for Blg. Inspector (wet stamped scans) 11x17 set for Fire Department o 1 – fire protection narrative- Dino o 1 – ch. 13 energy code review- KFA o 1 – ch. 17 structural tests & inspections- Ryan o 1- AAB report including waivers- KFA o Affidavits – from arch and various disciplines - TEAM • Team met w/building inspector today. o Generally in good shape. o It was decided to leave glass partition at top of curved stair in place rather than apply for a variance. Lou did say he would inquire if there are other options. o Code summary – Lou is okay with the format LF used before (more extensive version). o Water fountain at third floor: Lou said to send email and he will forward to plumbing inspector. o Key operation of lift: Lou recommended call to elevator board, especially if there is an anticipated change in code. o If lift not operational at time of substantial completion, that will not be a problem for occupancy. • Team met w/fire inspector after meeting (see below) 1.5 Long lead time item - Lift • Specs and drawings almost ready. • Garavanta: Roger reported price and delivery time is good. Charlie is fine as already have service contract on campus. • Need starting amperage • Keyed operation: Laura to check with State. Don’t want it unless required. • Wall thickness needed for door frames: What is existing wall thickness? 1.6 Long lead time item – Windows • Spec, schedule and details almost ready. Some new windows, basement windows to be fixed. • Cavity, sill and head insulation: Laura tried to clarify, but this brought up more questions than it answered. Charlie suggested removing some window head trim at front and back wings. • Marvin is 4-6 weeks (8 to be safe). • Color: Sierra White confirmed with Lorin. Green for basement vents and windows. • Interior finish: Factory finish (white) confirmed with Lorin. 1.7 Long lead time item – MEP items • Fan Coils and ERV: CD in progress, typically 8-10 weeks • Light Fixtures: CD in progress, Dino will share with vendors to check lead time. • Plumbing Fixtures: CD in progress, LF received cuts for review. 1.7a Long lead time item – Slate • Details and specifications okay for now. KFA will be developing a few more details, including membrane details. 1.8 What is needed from design team? • Demo drawings: Roger requests single set of demo drawings, melding MEP and architectural. • Site drawings: KFA revised fencing locations will resubmit to Charlie. • Structural (see below) 1.9 What is needed from design team – Specification clarifications • Finishes: LF coordinating with Lorin. • Signage: needs more clarifications. Directoy could be simple frame for printed paper insert. 1.11 Early Work (not discussed this meeting): • Just about anything in the basement, including footings for structural. • Can steam be shut off early? Possibly. Could use portable heaters. What about Clark Hall? Charlie to check. 2.1 Insulation (not discussed this meeting): • Walls: Alternate $17,000 for closed cell (vs open cell) PIP installation. Laura would generally prefer open cell in walls (water blown). CC asked if this is correct for drying brick. LF will confirm. • Roof: Laura provided alternative to spray closed cell applications that she would like to research further. If acceptable she suggests on-site test. Laura will send Tom material specs (done). • Intumescent paint: In specs for now and review with inspector later. 2.2 80% Drawings: • Decision was made to have a “final review” on the 12th to ensure we are in good shape for pricing. Then revise for early the following week. 3.1 Water Service (not discussed this meeting): needs to be quick turn-over to reduce down time of fire suppression and landscape watering. 3.2 Structural: • Reviewed for constructability including requirements for demo, sprinkler conflicts etc. • Dino to send loading requirements for mechanical equipment in attic. • Can long LVL be spliced – LF not sure on the outcome of this question. • Add numbered grid to all plans (KFA) • Investigation still required to confirm beam locations. • Need foot design by 13th. New investigation required at footing at piers near new posts. Some discussion about removal and replacement of brick flooring in basement (LF didn’t catch decision). • Investigate ceiling at masonry wall demo (for HVAC penetrations). Would like to remove entire wall if possible. 3.4 • Chimney caps and venting: Stay with gas heater and line chimney. Check size of existing flue. 3.5 Mechanical Coordination: • Dino meeting with department to review next week. • Cut slab for floor drain, locate and connect. • Exterior condensing unit –Do we need AC in conference room or could we add later if needed? Lots of outside air! CC will double check. • Specs – send sample to Dino to match format • Sanitary Lines: Check that capped ones can work. NEW BUSINESS 4.1 Interiors / Colors (after meeting): • Bronze window sash locks – Lorin confirmed • Decorative lights-Lorin looking at colors. • Can shelving in Study change? • Send Lorin DWG of First and full set of PDF • Laura and Charlie will schedule color and finish meeting later with faculty. 4.2 Fire (Dino and KFA met with chief after meeting) • Generally in good shape. • Okay with enunciator @ ramp. • - Limited smokes (only @ lift, mech, etc) are okay. Next Meeting: Thursday April 12th, 9:00 am. This will be a “final review and coordination meeting”. All team can be there. The meeting was adjourned. The above is the understanding of Laura Fitch.
