For LEDs,this variance results in differences in the color and intensity of light output as well as electrical characteristics.Due to these differences,LED manufacturers sort production into"bins,"but insuring the availability of a single bin is very difficult. To minimize this issue and achieve optimal color consistency in its products,Color Kinetics has developed and uses a proprietary technology called Optibin. Optibin is an advanced production binning optimization process that minimizes the effects of LED variance for the best possible output uniformity in the final product. Color Kinetics Optibin technology gives the most consistent control of color and intensity from product to product. Designed for accent or perimeter lighting or as a component of a custom fixture, iColor Flex SLX provides lighting professionals with a "building block" for the design and creation of custom applications. Uses may include: curtain walls, lined building facades, and under-cabinet lighting. Depending on the iColor Flex SLX application selected, you can create custom color changing effects or custom animation. iColor Flex SLX may be used as a traditional string light or can be custom mounted with the optional mounting clips or mounting tracks. t iColor Flex SLX is a strand of 50 individually-addressable LED nodes driven by Color Kinetics' ' Chromasic®technology. This dynamic integration of power, communication, and control gives the lighting designer extraordinary color flexibility. LEDs are addressed and powered through Chromasic s; technology—o Chromocore®embedded microchip on every node. Thus, each node can generate virtu- ally any color at any specified time. Node lenses are available in two models;flat and clear,or domed and translucent. Nodes are mounted in small plastic housings and are arrayed in 4 or 12-inch (0.1 or 0.305 m) increments along a three-wire 16 AWG cable. An integral 50-foot(15.2 m) leader runs from u the power/data supply to the first node. Standard colors for iColor Flex SLX are white or black. (Custom node spacing schemes and node color options are available by special order.) iColor Flex SLX receives power and data from a dedicated Color Kinetics 12V Chromasic power/data n supply—available with Ethernet control, DMX512 control,or pre-programmed effects. NATURE OF PROPOSED WORK: ZPA-Erect illuminated sculpture(GLOBE TIME PIECE)with uplighting and flashing LEDs. HARDSHIP: CONDITION OF APPROVAL: 1) This permit shall expire six months after the end of the appeal period. The applicant may return to the Planning Board to request the permit to be extended, in perpetuity, if the Board determines that there are no detrimental effects of the lighting scheme. FINDINGS: The Planning Board granted the permit for the lighting scheme for 6 months trial based on the information submitted with the application. The Board approved the plans with requested waivers and found that: A. The requested use protects adjoining premises against seriously detrimental uses. The lighted sculpture is on the roof and does not directly illuminate other structures. The light fixtures are hidden behind the parapet. B. The requested use will have no effect on traffic. C. The requested use will not impact surrounding uses/open spaces and landscaping but the lighted sculpture adds to the festive character of downtown and is consistent with the emphasis of artistic presence in downtown. D. The requested use will not overload city services. E. The requested use for the lighting of the sculpture was reviewed for conformance with section 12.2 and the Board determined that the proposed soft lighting would not be detrimental to light pollution levels and does not fall into advertising/signage. F. There are no requirements to comply with relative to the standard technical performance standards since this is a review of lighting only on the roof of an existing structure. Since this is close to the bearing walls of the roof loads it will be of lesser impact to any over load and will use existing but redistributed dead load. 5. all snow will be removed from this corner of the roof throughout the winter until the new parapet shear connections [item#6 below] can be fabricated and no more than 100 sq ft per person live load or no more than 5 people at a time near that roof area. Phase II. 6. Remove the weights from all new steel base anchor positions and tie the steel frame into shear wall connections by new connector rigid bending frame point loads. This will move all ball frame loads into the bearing walls and off of the roof. Then snow loads can once again occur as they have for the 80 years since it was built. 7. The design drawings of that connection will be part of the building permit and will use existing structure by added shear points in 3 new locations in the parapet corner. I certify the structural adequacy of the above. Sincerely, Tristram W. I have spoken with the structural engineer Christine Frawley who will not certify the structure lacking accurate as built data. I will redesign the structural situation to mitigate and reduce existing loads as built. I have spoken with David Claxton the general contractor and have been twice to the site to inspect with hotel Manager Mansour and than Steven Smith ball design engineer. My certification of this project will be two phased; Phase 1. The as built structural installation is sitting now on the roof in an empirical live load test of apparent structural adequacy minus wind and snow. Given the structural engineer's analysis the 1927 code might only have encouraged the original hotel designers to allow for a 20 pound snow load. This is the weight of the concrete pavers installed in place currently protecting the rubber roof. 1. we will remove all concrete 12x12 pavers not under the new steel ball frame leaving those only to distribute that new steel load out to+/-6". 2. for wind we will tie back the pole's top by two new 5/16" ss cables that will be anchored into newly drilled holes for 3W' shear bolts 8"into the brick parapet wall epoxied at 12" above the roof level [for water leaks] where they will be weighted down by the upper 36" of 12" brick wall above it in mortared shear and brick dead load. This eliminates the issue of bolts being pulled out since they will be in shear bending only. 3. we will tie the ball's connected but loose 1/a" ss cable to an existing anchor bolted down into the opposite low parapet wall over the kitchen. This will be centered roughly between the two new parapet cables 90 degrees to each other as a safety factor given its already attached to the ball itself and that anchor exists. low 0 B 8 aaf ACll lS6[It6 r„td, DEPARTMENT OF BUIIDITjG INSPECTIONS 212 Main Street a Municipal Building Northampton, Mass. 01060 WORKER'S COMTENSATION INSURANCE AFFMAVIT I, Pioneer Contractor (licenscrJperm►ttec} ,vlth a principal place of business/residence at: _ E!
