Subject: Fire November 27, 1998
Dear Ms. Reid,
As you were aware our office was called by Northampton Fire Department to your house
for fire located in electrical outlet for your clothes dryer. The electrical panel in your
basement is a Federal Pacific, the 30 amp circuit breaker serving the dryer failed to trip.
Federal Pacific is no longer in business and there has been a history of their panels with
their breakers not tripping when there has been a overload on a circuit. The risk for fire is
very great with these panels because of this fault. The clothes dryer, before it can be used,
must have the line feeding dryer checked and panel tested. A licensed electrician must be
hired and inspections done by the Inspector of Wires of the City of Northampton.
I also observed that the smoke detector in the basement failed to operated because the
batteries were dead in the detector, for your safety you should check all the smoke
detectors in your house to insure that they are operating properly.
