Subject:Deck Support for Hot Tub
The following is a summary report of my evaluation of the above-mentioned issue. The live load
is 90 psf live at the hot tub for an extent of about 7 feet from the west end, and 40 psf elsewhere
on the deck.
The deck joists are 2x8 P.T. spaced at 16" on center with a span of about 6'-3". They are
adequate for this loading. Joist hangers must be rated for a minimum of 500 lbs.
The north end of the joists bear on a double 2x10 P.T. beam that spans the full 19 ft. width of
that section of the building. For this loading, the span of this beam needs to be reduced by
placing a post down onto the exterior wall below, approximately 8 feet from the northwest
corner, in order to clear the window. There must be a stud in the wall under this new post
location.
The south end of the joists bear on a double 1.75" x 11.875" LVL beam under the deck along the
main house. For this loading, this beam is sufficient. However, full bearing must be provided at
each end on studs in the sidewalls below. These need to be added if they do not exist. Some
field verification is therefore required.
